Documented cases

When the BDDT classification was put forward in 1940 such isotherms were rare and although a number of well documented cases of both types have been reported in recent years they must still be regarded as somewhat uncommon. 

Effects on Combustion Toxicology. There appears to be no documented case of any type of fine retardant contributing to human fine casualties. A survey of data from small-scale combustion or pyrolysis experiments revealed no consistent pattern of decrease or increase in the yields of toxic gases (CO, HCN) when phosphoms flame retardants were present (152,153).

It does seem, however, that this may be an over-simplification, as there are documented cases where mono-iV-oxides rather than the di-iV-oxides are formed for instance, the reaction of benzofuran-3(2//)-ones with benzofuroxan yields 3-(o-hydroxyphenyI)quinoxa-line 1-oxide (Scheme 52). Other mechanistic possibilities may also be put forward but it seems probable that more than one pathway may be operating, particularly in view of the more recent findings on the reactions of benzofuroxans (81AHC(29)251). 

The market for PPVC film and sheet is only slightly less than for wire and cable insulation. Uses are as diverse as seepage barriers, factory doors, inflatables, baby pants, car trim, covering materials for book bindings and document cases and shower curtains. UPVC film has also been widely used for packaging of food, particularly for shrink-wrap purposes, but this market has been subject to some substitution by polypropylene. 

The metal itself, having an appreciable vapour pressure, is also toxic, and produces headaches, tremors, inflammation of the bladder and loss of memory. The best documented case is that of Alfred Stock (p. 151) whose constant use of mercury in the vacuum lines employed in his studies of boron and silicon hydrides, caused him to suffer for many years. The cause was eventually recognized and it is largely due to Stock s publication in 1926 of details of his experiences that the need for care and adequate ventilation is now fully appreciated. 

The well-documented case of the United States serves as an illustration. During the period 1870 to 1900 the farm population was increased through a rapid expansion of the agricultural area. The agricultural labor force increased by 60 percent, but there was a replacement of labor by nonland capital in the form of horses and mules. New and more efficient types of horse-drawn machinery including plows, cultivars, seed drills, grain harvesters, and mowers became available. 

Unfortunately, there are now more than 100 documented cases in which airbags have caused fatalities rather than preventing them. Many of the victims were infants or small children it is now... 

Such functionality can also be of great practical importance since functional initiators, transfer agents, etc. are applied to prepare end-functional polymers (see Section 7.5) or block or graft copolymers (Section 7.6). In these cases the need to maximize the fraction of chains that contain the reactive or other desired functionality is obvious. However, there are also well-documented cases where weak links formed by initiation, termination, or abnormal propagation processes impair the thermal or photochemical stability of polymers. 

First of all it is worth to remind that there are not well documented cases of cocrystallizations between different components of a polymer blend. Hence, also... 

For a long time it was widely believed that experimental measurements accurately conformed to the normal distribution. On the whole this is a pretty fair approximation, perhaps arrived at by uncritical extrapolation from a few well-documented cases. It is known that real distributions are wider than the normal one r-distributions for 4 to 9 degrees of freedom (see Section 1.2.2) are said to closely fit actual data.20... 

Starvation or disease can lead to rapid release of the stored xenobiotic and to delayed toxic effects. In one well-documented case in the Netherlands (see Chapter 5), wild female eider ducks (Somateria mollissima) experienced delayed neurotoxicity caused by dieldrin. The ducks had laid down large reserves of depot fat before breeding, and these reserves were run down during the course of egg laying. Dieldrin concentrations quickly rose to lethal levels in the brain. Male eider ducks did not lay down and mobilize body fat in this way and did not show delayed neurotoxicity due to dieldrin. 

It is very clear, therefore, that there have been many examples of neurotoxic effects, both lethal and sublethal, caused by pesticides in the field over a long period of time. Far less clear, despite certain well-documented cases, is to what extent these effects, especially sublethal ones, have had consequent effects at the population level and above. Interest in this question remains because neurotoxic pesticides such as pyre-throids, neonicotinoids, OPs, and carbamates continue to be used, and questions continue to be asked about their side effects, for example, on fish (Sandahl et al. 2005), and on bees and other beneficial insects (see, for example, Barnett et al. 2007). 

Cross-reactions with aspirin and NSAIDs are of practical importance. Typically, AIA patients are sensitive to all NSAIDs that preferentially inhibit COX-1 (table 2). Acetaminophen (paracetamol), a weak inhibitor of COX-1, is regarded as a relatively safe therapeutic alternative for almost all patients with AIA. High doses of the drug (>1,000 mg) have been reported to provoke mild, easily reversed bronchos-pasm in some AIA patients [13]. Some rare, well-documented cases of coexistence of aspirin and paracetamol sensitivity have been described. However, according to a recent meta-analysis, less that 2% of asthmatics are sensitive to both aspirin and paracetamol [14]. 

Current computerized analyses of adverse events still typically consist of a vast number of discrete, often personal, ad hoc processes that mimic paper and pencil methods. Some commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat , Microsoft Word , Excel ) do have the capability to search for specihc terms in electronic documents/case reports and do have navigational tools with hyperlinks and fullfull-text indexing that enable researchers to create their own hyperlinks. Some other COTS software tools (e.g., SAS , Excel , Access , IMP ) allow importation of electronic case report tabulations (ECRT) for more detailed analysis. 

To date, there are no documented cases of chronic hepatitis A.1 Death associated with HAV is rare and is mostly associated with fulminant hepatitis, with which approximately 100 people die annually.1... 

U.S. EPA has documented case histories of full-scale treatment of aluminum forming wastewaters, which are included in Appendixes A, B, C, and D of this chapter for reference. The detailed theories and principles of the full-scale treatment processes can be found in the literature.8-10... 

The most documented case is the Be-H complex in GaAs, which is characterized by a LVM at 2037 cm-1 (Nandhra et al., 1988). Stavola et al. (1989) have studied the effect of uniaxial stress on this LVM. The use of uniaxial stress allows the orientational degeneracies to lift and therefore gives the symmetry of the center evidenced by its LVM. 

Another well-documented case of feral fish chronically exposed to mercury through the effluent of the chlor-alkali plant is the case of the Cinca tributary [64, 65]. Barbel and bleak were collected upstream (SI) and downstream (S2) a chlor-alkali plant located at Monzon (Fig. 3). It is important to point out that there is no physical barrier between SI and S2 to prevent fish upstream migration of suspicious contaminated fishes from S2. 

Well-documented cases exist where the estrogens inhibit the expression of some genes. These are usually transcribed by means of the constitutive activity of powerful promoters. The inhibition is a result of the steric interposition of the receptor dimer in the development region of the gene, which thereby recruits corepressors that interrupt the prior instigator effect in the absence of receptor (McKenna et al. 1999 Mester et al. 1995 Smith et al. 1997 Tora et al. 1989). 

Melioidosis can spread from person to person by contact with the blood and body fluids of an infected person. Two documented cases of male-to-female sexual transmission involved males with chronic prostatic infection due to melioidosis.
