Mercury salts are highly toxic and must be handled carefliUy. It is necessary to consult the material safety data sheet prior to handling. Strict adherence to OSHA/EPA regulations is essential. The ACGIH adopted (1991—1992) TLV for mercury as inorganic compounds is TWA 0.1 mg/m and for fluorides as F 2.5 mg/m. ... 

Health and Safety Factors. The Material Safety Data Sheets provided by the suppUers should be consulted for each product. In general, products are aqueous emulsions with low levels of toxicity. Products with high solvent content have mostly been eliminated. Personnel handling the chemicals should always avoid contact of the products with skin and eyes, and avoid exposure to vapors if the product contains volatile components. 

The alkalis and acids used to catalyze phenolic reactions are highly corrosive and any exposure is a potentially serious health threat. Those handling these materials should be thoroughly familiar with the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets and emergency procedures. We do not purport to provide any specific health guidance here except to say that one should consult the appropriate references and be properly trained when making phenolic resins. 

First, the low boiling point (37 C) can lead to handling difficulty. We found it necessary to replace the Waters 6000A pump in the Waters Model 244 high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) with a Waters M45 pump to avoid an occasional interruption in flow which we assured to be caused by vapor lock. Second, there are health hazards associated with the use of HFIP, and hygenlc laboratory procedures should be followed. Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil is usually regarded as nontoxic, nonsensitizing and nonirritant when used in sufficient dilution. Most of the alkane, alkene, and alkyne hydrocarbon compounds are considered to be flammable as their major hazard, and the toxicity is considered as moderate to low. The vapors are more likely to be asphyxiant than toxic. TLVs range from 50 ppm for hexane to 300 ppm for octane. Decane is listed as having a narcotic effect. Many of these hydrocarbons are found in mixtures, and it will be necessary to look at the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to obtain toxicity information on particular mixtures. Benzene, toluene, and xylene are aromatic hydrocarbons. They are considered highly toxic and human carcinogens. Benzene has a TLV of 0.1 ppm in air, according to the NIOSH Guide 1997 Addition, and an STEL of 1 ppm. The OSHA STEL is 5 ppm and a PEL of 1 ppm. Toluene is toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption. The TLV for toluene is 100 ppm in air. Xylenes are toxic by... 

Common Data Source Approach. Another approach is to use a common source of data for benchmarking a set of chemicals. Examples of potential data sources include Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) from product manufacturers, the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), the International Uniform Chemical Information Database (lUClID), the High Rroduction Volume Information System (HRVIS), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Screening Information Dataset (SIDS), and the Canadian Domestic Substances list... 

The required hazardous material information is primarily being provided to the fire departments as printed material presently but this is rapidly changing. Generic databases containing thousands of Material Safety Data Sheets are now available on optical disks (CD-ROMs) which provide encyclopedic amounts of data. SmaU computers have also developed the capabihty of inexpensively placing information on these disks so that locaUy specific irrformation can be added. The rapid growth of the Internet and the expansion of high speed data access also makes it feasible to obtain MSDS...
