Inhalation of certain fine dusts may constitute a health hazard. Eor example, exposure to siUca, asbestos, and beryllium oxide dusts over a period of time results ki the potential risk of lung disease. OSHA regulations specify the allowable levels of exposure to kigestible and respkable materials. Material Safety Data Sheets, OSHA form 20, available from manufacturers, provide information about hazards, precautions, and storage pertinent to specific refractory products.

Material Safety Data Sheets (OSHA Form 20, see Figure 1) are available from suppliers for every chemical sold. These give valuable information of a specific nature and should be kept on file. A phone call to the nearest office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor will bring forth more information on safety, both oral and written.

In the United States, MSDSs originated in the shipbuilding industry using a format designated as the US Department of Labor, Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) Form 20. Chemical manufacturers expanded the original 2-page OSHA Form 20 in order to more adequately provide health and safety data on chemical products. Under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200) issued in 1983, MSDS requirements are performance oriented and do not require a specific format. However, there is a nonmandatory OSHA Form 174. 

Many companies have developed alternatives to OSHA Form 20 for general use. These alternative forms often provide for the exclusion of trade secret information, particularly of the chemical names and percentages of ingredients. Such forms generally provide the telephone number of a company official who can be called in the event of a medical emergency. Such information can be...

Although OSHA Form 20 or one approved as essentially similar is mandatory only in the maritime trades (7), it has become customary throughout the chemical industry to obtain or prepare a material safety data sheet before a new chemical enters a workplace. For products in the same industrial hazard class the information provided on the material safety data sheet is the same, except as modified by differences in physical properties. For example, the spill removal instructions for liquids are different from those for solids. Figs. 4a and 4b show a material safety data sheet for a dry, powdered sodium silicate in the lowest hazard class. 

Keep OSHA-required records of injuries and illnesses and post a copy of the totals fixim the last page of OSHA Form 300 during the entire month of February each year.

Let s start with your bare minimum responsibilities the OSHA forms, as required under 29 CFR Part 1904, Recording and Reporting Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. 

Note Many states have their own OSHA-approved occupational safety and health programs. Contact your state s labor department to determine if you should comply with the federal OSHA regulations or your state s requirements. Most states follow the same recordkeeping requirements and use the same forms as the federal regulations. Also note that some insurance companies have their own forms that you can use instead of the OSHA forms. Check with your insurance carrier for information. 

Part 1904 requires employers to keep records of any work-related injuries or illnesses using OSHA Forms 300, 301, and 300A. None of these forms is sent to OSHA, but they are subject to OSHA auditing and failing to keep them can result in thousands of dollars in penalties. 

OSHA Form 300 — Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses. This form requires you to enter basic information about each recordable injury or illness. The form must be kept for five years following the year in which the incident occurred. Employees and... 

OSHA Form 300A—Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses. This form contains a summary of your company s annual illnesses and injuries, and it must be posted each year for your employees to see. A company executive must certify its accuracy. 

Post your injury/illness summary each year Your employees have a right to know about the injuries and illnesses occurring in their workplace. To that end, you must post the OSHA Form 300A in a visible location by February 1st each year, and leave it posted until April 30th. The posted form should contain information from the previous calendar year.
