Mass spectrometry pressure chemical ionization

Carboxylic acids The smallest carboxylic acid, formic acid, can be measured using infrared spectroscopy (Table 11.2), since it has characteristic absorption bands. As discussed earlier and seen in Fig. 11.33b, mass spectrometry with chemical ionization using SiF5 also revealed HCOOH in an indoor environment (Huey et al., 1998). However, since the sensitivity in these initial studies was about two orders of magnitude less than that for HN03, the detection limit may be about the same as that for FTIR and TDLS. Formic and acetic acids have been monitored continuously from aircraft (Chapman et al., 1995) and their surface flux determined by eddy correlation (Shaw et al., 1998) using atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry. Detection limits are about 30 ppt. [Pg.594]

Gas-phase acid-base studies are usually performed by using one of the following techniques high-pressure mass spectrometry (HPMS), chemical ionization mass spectroscopy (CIMS) with mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectroscopy/collision induced dissociation (MIKES/CID), flowing afterglow (FA) or ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometry. For a brief description of all methods, Reference 8 should be consulted. [Pg.697]

The term nebulizer is used generally as a description for any spraying device, such as the hair spray mentioned above. It is normally applied to any means of forming an aerosol spray in which a volume of liquid is broken into a mist of vapor and small droplets and possibly even solid matter. There is a variety of nebulizer designs for transporting a solution of analyte in droplet form to a plasma torch in ICP/MS and to the inlet/ionization sources used in electrospray and mass spectrometry (ES/MS) and atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization and mass spectrometry (APCI/MS). [Pg.138]

Thus, either the emitted light or the ions formed can be used to examine samples. For example, the mass spectrometric ionization technique of atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI) utilizes a corona discharge to enhance the number of ions formed. Carbon arc discharges have been used to generate ions of otherwise analytically intractable inorganic substances, with the ions being examined by mass spectrometry. [Pg.388]

A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method that can quantitatively analyze urinar y normal and modified nucleosides in less than 30 min with a good resolution and sufficient sensitivity has been developed. Nineteen kinds of normal and modified nucleosides were determined in urine samples from 10 healthy persons and 18 breast cancer patients. Compounds were separ ated on a reverse phase Kromasil C18 column (2.1 mm I.D.) by isocratic elution mode using 20 mg/1 ammonium acetate - acetonitrile (97 3 % v/v) at 200 p.l/min. A higher sensitivity was obtained in positive atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mode APCI(-i-). [Pg.351]

An on-line chromatography/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-APCI/MS/MS) methods was developed for rapid screen of pharmacokinetics of different drugs, including 5 (98RCM1216). The electron impact mass spectrum of 5 and ethyl 9,10-difluoro-3-methyl-7-oxo-2,3-dihydro-7Ff-pyrido[l,2,3- fe]-l,4-benzoxazine-6-carboxylate was reported (97MI28). Crescenzi et al. developed a multi-residue method for pesticides including propanil in drinking water, river water and groundwater based on SPE and LC/MS detection. The recoveries of the pesticides by this method were >80%. Santos etal. developed an on-line SPE method followed by LC/PAD and LC/MS detection in a simultaneous method for anilides and two degradation products (4-chloro-2-methylphenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol) of acidic herbicides in estuarine water samples. To determine the major degradation product of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline, the positive ion mode is needed for atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI/MS) detection. The LOD of 3,4-dichloroaniline by APCI/MS was 0.1-0.02 ng mL for 50-mL water samples. [Pg.341]

For confirmatory assay, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is becoming more frequently used in the analysis of OTC owing to its high sensitivity and ability. Electrospray ionization (ESI) [55-57] and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) [41] methods combined with tandem mass spectrometry are favored because of their higher sensitivity and better reproducibility. Hamscher et al. [58] developed a method for the determination of persistent TC residues in soil fertilized with manure by HPLC tandem mass spectrometry, MS-MS, and confirmation by MS-MS-MS. Zhu et al. [59] developed an LC-tandem mass spectrometry for the analysis of common tetracyclines in water. The detection limit for oxytetracycline was 0.21 pg/L. Lykkeberg et al. [60] used LC-MS/MS for determination of oxytetracycline and its impurities EOTC, TC, ETC, ADOTC, oc-AOTC, and /i-AOTC. [Pg.111]

For the last several years, mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) have determined the trends in the analysis of dyes. Since 1987, various variants of ESI have been used in which droplet formation was assisted by compressed air,[1,2] temperature (e.g. Turbo Ion Spray ) or ultrasound, and they were able to handle flow rates up to 1 2 ml min This made a combination of analytical RPLC and ESI easily and widely used. The reason why it often was (and is) used instead of a traditional UV-Vis detector is the better sensitivity and selectivity of MS in comparison with spectrophotometric detection. Apart from these advantages, MS offers easily interpretable structural information. However, various... [Pg.365]
