Other typical examples of defect limits are clearance tolerances of turbo-machinery assemblies, which are measured and recorded during machinery overhauls. Defect limits are not always as obvious as those stated above. Mechanical shaft couplings are very difficult to determine when serviceability is questionable, as they have no wear indicators to provide guidance. 

Exposed shafts and shaft couplings shall be wrapped with waterproof, moldable waxed cloth or volatile-corrosion inhibitor paper. The seams shall be sealed with oil-proof adhesive tape.

Out-of-limit temperatures for rotating mechanical components and systems are usually based on values established by the manufacturers. Pump and compressor equipment that could benefit from an infrared thermography inspection program include motor gears, bearings, shafts, couplings, V—belts, pulleys, compressors, vacuum pumps, and clutches.
