Lymphocytes cell-mediated immunity

Lymphocyte immune-, anti -thymocyte-globulin (Atgam) Horse IgG antibodies which selectively suppress T-lymphocytes (cell-mediated immunity) and humoral immunity. Prevention of organ transplant rejection, aplastic anemia. Fever, chills, leukopenia, throm -bocytopenia, skin reactions. Less often arthralgia, chest or back pain, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, headache, night sweats (serum sickness). 

There is a broad range of mechanisms against these targets, such as specific cytokines, tumor cell expression of rejection antigens and inducing lymphocyte co-stimulatory molecules on tumor cells (vide infra). Non-specific approaches also exist, e.g. Bacille Calmet Guerrin vaccine (BCG), which elicits a T lymphocyte cell-mediated immune response, can be used not only to prevent tuberculosis but also to (non-specifically) prevent the recurrence of bladder cancer.

Antigens, however, can induce a second type of response which is known as the cell-mediated immune response. The antigenic agent stimulates the appearance of sensitized lymphocytes in the body which confer protection against organisms that have the ability to live and replicate inside the cells of the host. Certain of these lymphocytes are also involved in the rejection of tissue grafts.

Granuloma A small nodular delimited aggregation of mononuclear inflammatory cells, or such a collection of modified macrophages usually surrounded by a rim of lymphocytes. Generally denotes a chronic, cell-mediated immune response. 

The primary function of the B lymphocytes is to produce antibodies, which are molecules that identify and lead to the destruction of foreign substances such as bacteria. The B lymphocytes and the antibodies they produce are responsible for humoral immunity. T lymphocytes provide immunity against viruses and cancer cells. These lymphocytes directly attack and destroy their targets by forming holes in the target cell membrane, causing cell lysis. The T lymphocytes are responsible for cell-mediated immunity.

Large numbers of activated macrophages surround the solid caseous (cheese-like) TB foci (the necrotic area) as a part of cell-mediated immunity. Delayed-type hypersensitivity also develops through activation and multiplication of T lymphocytes. Macrophages form granulomas to contain the organisms.
