Immunity Lymphocytes

Cell-mediated immunity Lymphocyte mitogenic response to concanavalin A and mixed lymphocyte response to allogeneic lymphocytes local lymph node assay. [Pg.531]

Heavy Metals. Some heavy metals such as gold and platinum are used pharmacologically as immunomodulators to treat rheumatoid arthritis and as antineoplastic drugs, respectively. Most heavy metals inhibit mitogenicity, antibody responses, and host resistance to bacterial or viral challenge, and tumor growth. Platinum has been shown to suppress humoral immunity, lymphocyte proliferation, and macrophage function (Lawrence, 1985). Clinically, mild to moderate myelosuppression may also be evident with transient leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. [Pg.549]

Lipid A acts ( ) on distinct cell types from innate immunity (monocytes/macrophages, NK cells, PMNs, dendritic cells) and adaptive immunity (lymphocytes). [Pg.532]

This observation of non-cell autonomy raises the potential importance of non-neuronal cells such as innate immune microglia and adaptive immune lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of motoneuron injury in ALS. [Pg.380]

Figure 68. Autophagy. Under lymphocyte attack, human sarcoma cells extensively vacuolized their cytoplasm, but remained metabolically alive. These unusual cells were viewed and photographed in the late 1960s. Then the phenomenon of autophagy was not recognized as such. Some sort of mmor cell dormancy was considered (Sinkovics JG J Med edited by Julian Ambrus Sr 1970 1 15-25 313-326 reproduced in Sinkovics JG Cytolytic Immune Lymphocytes... Schenk Buchverlag, Passau/Budapest, 2008) (147). Figure 68. Autophagy. Under lymphocyte attack, human sarcoma cells extensively vacuolized their cytoplasm, but remained metabolically alive.
