Literature Retrieval

One of the most useful services of the Internet is the broad access to the literature. Keeping up on literature is a problem to all scientists — there is more to read and less time to do so today than ever before. Simply making the literature available at one s desktop, not having to go to a library, facilitates reading. Journals may not be available at the library either because the library does not subscribe, the journal is only published electronically, or the journal you want is missing. While one can generally get an interlibrary loan, this may take longer than a person has to work on a project. 

Retrieving patents, either domestic (http //www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html) or international (http //ep.espacenet.com/espacenet/ep/en/e net.httn), has been made easy via the Internet. It is possible to search and download complete patents at no cost. In the past, obtaining domestic patents was a problem, and international patents were nearly impossible to get in a timely manner. Leffingwell Associates have provided a compilation of patents (downloadable) at their site for the major flavor companies that have been issned patents since 1976. The patents fisted are directly

To make your title informative, be as specific as possible and avoid words that do not convey the specific content of your study. Also, remember to use keywords in your title. Because keywords promote effective literature retrieval, they should be used liberally in the title. In the following examples, words that were listed as keywords in the abstract are italicized. 

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of publications in the area of predictive toxicology and fate in the literature. No attempt will be made to list these here, as entry of keywords such as QSAR and toxicity into any literature retrieval service will reveal the references. Journals that have been particularly favoured for publications include Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (John Wiley), SAR and QSAR in Environmental Research (Taylor and Francis), and Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences (American Chemical Society). Other important journals include Chemosphere (Elsevier), Chemical Research in Toxicology (American Chemical Society), Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry), although this is by no means an exhaustive list.

One of the greatest resources for EBM is the World Wide Web. There are numerous sites that provide information on EBM, including literature retrieval and review, EB guidelines, and so on (Table 4). 

The second and more detailed section of the chapter discusses the scientific literature data bases relevant to the process of labeling in the chemical industry. It provides information with respect to services readily available to the labeler directly including libraries, chemical references and bibliographical sources for toxicological and medical information. The importance of the computerized literature retrieval system is discussed in detail because of its ability to increase the comprehensiveness and the efficiency of the search, especially for material involving hazardous chemical data in general and toxicological information in particular.

The Thermophysical Properties Research Literature Retrieval Guide makes it possible for an individual scientist or engineer, working in his office, to search quickly the contents of world journals, reports, and books for references to articles containing information on seven groups of specified thermophysical properties (16 properties) of all substances. 

As a complementary effort to its Data Tables Series, TPRC published in 1967 a work entitled Thermophysical Properties Research Literature Retrieval Guide. This three-book work reported 33,700 references on seven thermophysical property groups and about 45,000 materials. This Basic Edition systematically covered the world s unclassified literature published essentially between 1920 and mid-1964, in many instances going much earlier.
