Literature surveys information retrieval

More recently, the explosion in volume of chemical publications, and the large increase in amounts of data which result, have led to the development of computer-based systems for processing, correlating, and retrieving the information. Many services of this type are available to the chemist, and they include various personalized services devoted to making rapid but useful literature surveys. The technology for computer-based scientific information retrieval provides an efficient means of surveying the analytical literature. For example, complete archives of all American Chemical Society journals have recently become available on-line. 

The vast and steadily increasing volume of research into Mannich reactions makes it impossible to exhaustively review here the papers published on the topic with the same thoroughness that characterized previous publications that dealt with the literature up to the 1970s. Hence, we limit ourselves to a synthetical survey of the type of substrates employed in Mannich synthesis, with particular emphasis on the applications of the reaction. Updated references, however, enable the reader to search the literature to retrieve more comprehensive information on individual topics.
