Lectins lectin-like proteins

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that have been obtained mainly from plants,1128,138 although lectin-like proteins have also been found in micro-organisms and animals,139 including mammals.140 141 Some of the properties of the lectins, and their utility as carbohydrate-specific reagents have been reviewed.1128,138,138... 

Lectin-like proteins from Crinum moorei aggregated Staphyllococus aureus at 19 ag/ml and inhibited bacterial growth at a concentration of 0.8 mg/ml. No snch effects were observed against Bacillus subtilis (96). 

There is clear evidence for the involvement of three sporozoite-expressed proteins in the invasion of the salivary glands CSP, TRAP, MAEBL and four members of the LAP (LCCL/lectin adhesive-like protein family) (Raine et al., 2007) involved in sporozoite development. CSP, encoded by a single copy gene, is not found in any other apicomplexan and has been the target of many vaccine studies. CSP, is the major surface protein of the sporozoite, forming a dense coat on the parasite surface. It is presumably secreted by the apical organelles, has a signal peptide, a central domain with many amino acid repeats and a C-terminal...

The property of conformational restriction in polysaccharides make them candidates for being the initial self-ordering molecules of prebiotic evolution. This same property in the complex carbohydrate moiety of glycoproteins is the basis of carbohydrate-mediated information transfer through cell surface oligosaccharides interacting with each other or with lectin-like proteins in cell-cell recognition processes. 

Cell-to-cell bonding due to interactions between lectin-like proteins and carbohydrates on the yeast cell wall, which is dependent on calcium and sensitive to sugar residues. 

Mannose- and mannose-6-phosphate inhibit adhesion of G. lamblia trophozoites to cultured human intestinal cells [100]. One of the lectin-like proteins from the parasite that may bind these sugars is termed taglin, which may be in the range of 28-30 kDa [101, 102], In addition, the parasite expresses a 148 kDa protein with a-methyl-mannoside binding activity [103].

The content by weight of carbohydrate in glycoproteins may vary from only a few percent to over 50 percent in some proteins in mucous secretions. Although the function of the polysaccharide in most glycoproteins is unknown, in some cases it may provide hydrophilicity, recognition, and points of noncovalent interaction with other proteins through lectin-like affinity binding. 

Adhesion proteins belonging to this group contain a lectin-like domain, a single EGF repeat, and a number of repeats of a protein domain related to the complement binding protein motif (LI).
