FIGURE 9.31 The known proteoglycans include a variety of structures. The carbohydrate groups of proteoglycans are predominantly glycosaminoglycans O-linked to serine residues. Proteoglycans include both soluble proteins and integral transmembrane proteins.

Glycoproteins are proteins that have been modified by the addition of one or more carbohydrate groups. Glycoproteins include blood group substances, among many others. 

Immunoglobulins are glycoproteins. The carbohydrate moiety is attached to the heavy chain (usually the Ch2 domain) via an N-linked glycosidic bond. Removal of the carbohydrate group has no effect upon antigen binding but does affect various antibody effector functions and alters its serum half-life. 

Covalent immobilization of lipase on nylon fibers has been done, using the enzymes carbohydrate groups as chemical link. Oxidation of the lipases carbohydrates with periodate provides aldehyde groups for the binding to hydrazide activated nylon (Lopez, Braun Klein, 1996).
