An extremely important safety issue with respect to ah. wood product manufacturing processes is personal worker safety. Ah of the processes use much moving machinery, usuahy including many saws or knives. Workers must continuahy remember the inherent dangers these machines involve as weh as other possible dangerous situations which could result from malfunctions or other errors. In addition, most processes are more or less dusty and noisy. Most employers require use of safety glasses and many require hearing protection, safety shoes, and hardhats as weh as other kinds of protection needed for Specific jobs. [Pg.379]

Another common system is the fixed knife mill. This consists of a chamber containing fixed knives and a rotating three-armed spider that shreds the fmit by forcing them against the fixed knives. Fmit are gravity fed into the chamber from an opening in the top. Small holes under the knives permit the mash to fall through to a conveyor. [Pg.572]

As the polymer molecular weight increases, so does the melt viscosity, and the power to the stirrer drive is monitored so that an end point can be determined for each batch. When the desired melt viscosity is reached, the molten polymer is discharged through a bottom valve, often under positive pressure of the blanketing gas, and extmded as a ribbon or as thick strands which are water-quenched and chopped continuously by a set of mechanical knives. Large amounts of PET are also made by continuous polymerization processes. PBT is made both by batch and continuous polymerization processes (79—81). [Pg.294]

Hard facing of various components in the aircraft gas-turbine engine and in industrial apphcations for textile machinery parts, oil and gas machinery parts, paper-shtting knives, etc, is estimated at 1 x 10 in 1995 with an estimated growth rate of 5% annually. The mix is approximately 45% aerospace apphcations, 55% industrial apphcations. Additionally, repair coatings for gas-turbine blades and vanes is estimated at 500 x 10 . The ends of the knives can be square, beveled, or rounded. If the end is square and parallel to the web, if the upstream face is perpendicular to the web, and if there is a fixed gap between the end of the knife and the web, then the wet coverage is exacfly one-half the gap. On the other hand, if there is a low angle in a converging section of the knife or of the blade, leading up to a tight gap, as there is for many knives and for all bent blades, then strong hydrodynamic forces build up and tend to lift the knife or blade away from the web. This forces more fluid under the knife or blade, so that the coated thickness is greater than half the gap. [Pg.304]

Labyrinth seals are simple to manufacture and can be made from conventional materials. Early designs of labyrinth seals used knife-edge seals and relatively large chambers or pockets between the knives. These relatively long knives are easily sibject to damage. The modern, more functional, and more reliable labyrinth seals consist of sturdy, closely spaced lands. Some labyrinth seals are shown in Fig. 10-107. Thixotropic filter cakes from rotary vacuum filters that cannot be preformed by any of the above methods can often be scored by knives on the filter, the scored cake discharging in pieces suitable for through-circulation diying. [Pg.1196]

Pellet Mills Pellet mills operate on the principle shown in Fig. 20-92. Moist, plastic feed is pushed through holes in dies of various shapes. The friction of the material in the die holes supplies the resistance necessary for compaction. Adjustable knives shear the rodlike extrudates into pellets of the desired length. Although several designs are in use, the most commonly used pellet mills operate by applying power to the die and rotating it around a freely turning roller with Fixed horizontal or vertical axis. [Pg.1901]

A simpler method would be using seratehing knives and making small squares in the surfaee (minimum 100) around I mm for primer and 2 mm for the final surface and applying adhesive cellophane tape 25.4 mm wide, with an adhesion strength of 40 2.8 g/mm then pulling it off suddenly.
