Knife-edge effect

If A] = A2 then it is not difficult to show that coexistence is possible. This is a knife-edge effect - exactly balanced parameters - and cannot be expected to be found in nature. 

The inner edge of the window seat must be rounded off to avoid any knife-edge effects on the window when it starts to bend in under pressure. The practical radius for sapphire windows with an unsupported-area diameter of 6 mm is 0.3 0.1 mm.

The equilibrium phosphate program is confined to those utility boilers operating under knife-edge control, where any changes in heat and mass transfer patterns at boiler surfaces and other high-heat flux areas may exert significant ripple effects throughout the boiler plant. 

Due to diffraction effects of micron-sized mirrors in a regular array, commonly used techniques for surface characterization based on interferometry are inefficient. To overcome the diffraction effects we have developed a novel surface characterization method with an incoherent light source, based on the Foucault s knife-edge test (Zamkotsian and Dohlen, 1999). Since Leon Foucault introduced the knife-edge test in the last century (Foucault, 1859), it has been widely used for testing optical surfaces (see Ch. 3). The test offers a simple way of obtaining easily understandable, qualitative information of the surface shape. 

The flexural pivot is free of the problems associated with the knife edge. However, it can act as a spring and therefore may add an extra force to the weighing process. This force may artificially subtract from an object s true mass and provide inaccurate readings. This effect may arise as a result of time or as temperature changes. Certain large nerves, branching from the spine, are very close to the skin surface over the kidneys. A blow here can rupture the kidney and cause severe nervous shock or death unless the victim receives immediate medical attention. To attack this area, use the knife edge of your hand (fig. 21). Other effective blows can be delivered with fingers folded at the second joints, the outside edge of your fist, the knee, or a toe kick. 

It is clear that, in the Ba+ problem, with an nf wavefunction poised on the knife edge between the two potential wells, there is an extremely sensitive dependence on the accuracy of the effective mean field. Hartree-Fock theory provides a first-order description of the phenomena involved, but... 

The effect of placing a knife-edge in the device is very small it is negligible because the amount of diffusion across the line where the knife-edge would be is a very small portion of the total mass transfer, and the flow held is affected only slightly.
