What country boy or girl has not lingered on the way home from school to nibble the dainty green buds of the sassafras, or to dig at the roots with his jack-knife for a sliver of aromatic bark ... [Pg.80]

Bro et al. [2001] developed a modification of N-PLS in which the same predictions are obtained, but the model of X is modified using a Tucker3 core array. This provides a better-fitting model of X and also enables post-rotations of scores and weights, e.g. for jack-knife based assessment of parameters. [Pg.127]

For this purpose the "leave one out" approach (also known as the jack-knife method (13,20)) was used the activity of each compound was predicted by the equation obtained from linear regression analysis on the sample leaving out the compound In question. The calculated standard deviation of the difference between the calculated and measured values Is, of course, larger than that obtained the usual way. Its Increase, however, brings plausible Information on the predictive power of the regression equation, as well as which compound s removal would Increase the significance of the equation most. Also Informative, which parameters and how frequently are considered In the equations obtained In the "leave one out" approach their continuous and systematic appearance also suggests a "real" correlation. [Pg.178]

To compare two different FROC curves is difficult because the upper limit to the number of false detections per image is undefined. This means that there is no way to define the area under an FROC curve, like it is done for ROC curves. Currently, the most common method for comparing FROC curves is to use jack-knife FROC (JAFROC) (Chakraborty and Berbaum 2004). Another option is to compare the sensitivity values at a fixed false detection rate or to compare the false detection rates at a fixed sensitivity. This, however, has less statistical significance than comparing the whole curve using JAFROC. Free software for JAFROC is available from Dev Chakraborty at http //www.devchakraborty.com. [Pg.94]

As the spin of the incident particle can couple in two ways to the orbital angular momentum i (to give total angular momenta of either = f =b 1/2), there are two solutions for each i to the one-body quantum problem posed above. These solutions are identified with -I- for the stretched (i.e., parallel) case and for the jack-knifed case. In the solution of the radial problem, the kinetic operator can be reduced to a simple second derivative by solving for the product of r times the radial wave function, sometimes called the reduced radial wave function y. Employing y and defining p - kr, the resulting radial wave equations become. [Pg.166]

As a proof-of-concept, the Lavigne group has investigated the sensor response for simple a,co-diamines with a chain lengths between two and six methylene groups. In addition, histamine was used as an analyte. The analysis was performed with the UV-Vis data obtained for a constant polymer concentration of 0.4mM, and for five different analyte concentrations between 0.5 and 5.0mM. The normalized absorption values at nine wavelengths were subjected to a LDA (see Glossary in Box 7.1). A jack-knifed classification matrix showed that the analyte can be identified with an accuracy of over 99% [23]. [Pg.180]
