Knife cutting

Manual stencils are made by knife-cutting special film stencil materials. These consist of two plastic layers. The image to be printed is cut through one layer, and this part of the stencil is placed in contact with the underside of the screen. A solvent, which is insoluble in the ink but attaches the cut stencil to the screen, is appHed and then the backing layer is removed. Manual stencils can also be produced by drawing directly on the screens using special materials. 

With a sharp knife cut around the detonator just below the lowest or second crimp mark where it is attached to the fuse assembly. This is most easily done by holding the knife firmly on the metal and slowly rolling the detonator-fuse assembly on a flat surface. See Figure 22. The soft metal of the detonator case cuts easily, allowing the detonator to be pulled off the nipple of the fuse assembly.

There is also an Urschel model CC sheer, able to produce flat potato slices, standard Crinkle, V slices, oval shreds, crescent shred, V shred, and strip cuts. Then there is the Urschel model GRL strip cutter, designed specifically for cutting plain and crinkle cut potato strips with slice thicknesses up to 14 mm and crosscut knife cuts from 7.1 to 22.2 mm. 

There are two simple ways to prepare samples (a) with a very sharp razor blade or an Exacto knife, cut in one continuous motion and (b) using a sharp paper punch, cut two holes close together and cut two parallel fines to make dumbbell-shaped specimens.

Pellet mills exemplify the use of extrusion. Tn some designs the charge material is forced out of cylindrical or other shaped holes located on the periphery of a cylinder within winch rollers and spreaders force the bulk materials through the openings. A knife cuts the extruded pellets to length as they are forced through the dies. 

Another microscopic technique is to freeze the specimen and then fracture it with a knife. A knife cutting through the frozen specimen splits the membrane down the middle, exposing the inside of the bilayer (fig. 17.13a). If the Davson-Danielli model for membrane structure were correct, the two exposed surfaces would be featureless. However, electron micrographs of metallic casts of such samples reveal surfaces studded with particles of various sizes (fig. 17.13(f)- Additional studies indicate that these particles are proteins that are deeply embedded in the membrane. The particles seen on the inner and outer leaflets of the bilayer usually differ in size and distribution because of an asymmetrical disposition of the proteins across the bilayer. 

Using rose-leaf cutters or a small sharp knife, cut out pointed-edge petals, making three sizes small, medium, and large. Using a silicone veiner (see page 232), make a slight impression on each petal.

Take a block of sodium metal out of the paraffin oil in which it is stored, and with a sharp knife cut approximately 1.5 g from it. Wash the block carefully in a beaker containing dry hexane to remove adhering oil and cut the block into three smaller pieces. There are two types of recycled wood chip obtained from house construction and demolition. These are called P-chip and S-chip (8). P-chip is defined as high quality knife-cut chips obtained from sound timbers or lumbers with a relatively large cross section as used in house construction. P-chips are mainly used in the pulp and paper industry. S-chip is a general term for crushed chips obtained from demolition wood or recycled wood. S-l chip is a high grade chip in for paper or board making. S-2 is for the board industry, and S-3 a low quality chip is for fuel. 

As the knife cuts the wood, the veneer is bent or rotated like a cantilevered beam and is liable to break (Figure 11.3a). An obvious way to reduce the bending moment...

IX of the caudal vermis and low activity in the hemisphere, was described by Mufson et al. (1991) for primates and man. The administration of colchicine results in the expression of NGF-R in most cerebellar Purkinje cells (Pioro and Cuello, 1988, 1990 Pioro et al, 1991). Koh et al. (1989) and Fusco et al. (1991) found NGF-R mRNA expression and NGF-R immunoreactivity in adult rats to be present in alternating Purkinje cell zones of strong and weak activity (Fig. 38C,D). This zonal pattern was also observed by Pioro and Cuello (1990). Its correspondence to the pattern of mabQ113 (Zebrin) immunoreactive zones (Hawkes and Leclerc, 1987) was noticed by Sotelo and Wassef (1991) and verified by Dusart et al. (1994) in adult rats. Lesions of the white matter, or knife cuts isolating the dorsal portion of the vermis of the rat cerebellum induces NGF-R immunoreactivity in previously unstained Purkinje cells (Martinez-Murillo et al., 1993 Dusart et al., 1994).
