Granulator knife

Granules can be precipitated and formed by extmding the viscous reaction mixture through a circular die containing several holes over which a knife blade rotates to cut the strands into granules (91). The granules are simultaneously slurried in dilute acetic acid to harden the particles for further washing. 

Experiment.1—Heat as much finely powdered indigo as amply covers the tip of a knife with about twice as much lead peroxide, a few granules of calcium chloride, and 5 c.c. of benzene in a test tube held in a boiling water bath for five minutes. Filter the reddish-brown solution obtained and divide the filtrate into two portions in test tubes. To one portion add quinol dissolved in very little alcohol, to the other dilute solution of stannous chloride in hydrochloric acid. The dehydroindigo is converted into the dye which separates in blue flocks. 

The granulating screw forces out the obtained mixture through dies in a mesh. The formed strings are cut into granules on the mesh with a special knife operated from an independent drive. The rotational speed of the knife is continuously adjusted.

In some size-reduction problems the feed stoeks are too tenacious or too resilient to be broken by compression, impact, or attrition, In other problems the feed must be reduced to particles of fixed dimensions. These requirements are met by devices that cut, chop, or tear the feed into a product with the desired characteristics. The sawtoothed crushers mentioned above do much of their work in this way. True cutting machines include rotary knife cutters and granulators. These devices find application in a variety of processes but are especially well adapted to size-reduction problems in the manufacture of rubber and plastics. They are finding important applications in recycling paper and plastic materials. ... 

The structure of the sulfur coatings is best observed in cross section. Cross sections of the coatings are prepared by fracturing granules with a sharp knife edge. The areas studied and reported are not near the pressure points and represent typical observations seen on several granules and not artifacts of specimen preparation. 

Granulators can be seen as the most versatile size-reduction machine for the complete sector of plastics size reduction, and are used for the dry reduction of plastics. The machines used for this application are therefore designed to meet the special demands of job conditions, which are sturdy mechanical design, quick knife replacement, easy cleaning, and high capacity. 

Hammers with blunt or impact edges are preferred for pulverizing and knife or sharp edges are preferred for chopping or sizing of granules (12).
