Keystone Coal Industry Manual, Maclean Hunter Pubhshing Co., Chicago, 1992. [Pg.8]

A reversal of potential of the tin—iron couple occurs when tin-coated steel (tin-plate) is in contact with acid solutions in the absence of air. The tin coating acts as an anode it is the tin that is slowly attacked and not the steel. This unique property is the keystone of the canning industry because dissolved iron affects the flavor and appearance of the product. Thus, the presence of tin protects the appearance and flavor of the product. [Pg.57]

Keystoning is an undesirable mode of motion that can arise with quadrilateral or hexahedral elements. These modes have no volume change and no shear. For example, the top of the element elongates and the bottom contracts in the appropriate ratio to give no volume change as shown in Fig. 9.12. Additional stiffness must be added to damp out the keystone modes [33]. [Pg.335]

War front reports are all depressing today. The Nazis claim they have driven to the edge of Stalingrad. At the same time the Japanese have broken through a mountain range in Guinea and are only 44 miles from Port Moresby, keystone of New Guinea defenses. [Pg.19]

Studies on muscle contraction carried out between 1930 and 1960 heralded the modem era of research on cytoskeletal stmctures. Actin and myosin were identified as the major contractile proteins of muscle, and detailed electron microscopic studies on sarcomeres by H.E. Huxley and associates in the 1950s produced the concept of the sliding filament model, which remains the keystone to an understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for cytoskeletal motility. [Pg.3]

The selection of materials of construction for the equipment and facilities to produce any and all chemicals is a Keystone subject of chemical engineering. The chemical products desired cannot be manufactured without considering the selection of the optimum materials of construction used as the containers for the safe, economical manufacture, and required product quahty, i.e., production, handling, transporting, and storage of the products desired. Therefore, within this Section, the selection of materials of construction [for use within the chemical process industries (CPI), and hy their consumers] is guided by the general subjects addressed herein. [Pg.3]

At ecological scale, since most soil organisms are saprophytic or mutualis-tic, i.e., dependent on the primary production of the plants, mineralization and immobilization in the rhizosphere represent the keystone processes determining the availability, quality, and renewal rate of soil resources used by plants. [Pg.186]

For studies involving test substance application to soil, there may be a requirement for more soil information than for studies where applications are made to foliage of established crops. The study protocol should describe any specific requirements relative to soil type selection and how to confirm the soil characteristics for the study. Most studies simply require that the soil be identified by its name (e.g., Keystone silt loam) and composition (e.g., percent sand, silt, and clay). This information can typically be acquired from farm records, a soil survey of the local area, or a typical soil analysis by a local soil analysis laboratory. In some instances, a GLP compliant soil analysis must be completed. The study protocol must clearly define what is needed and how it is to be obtained. Unless specified in the protocol, non-GLP sources are adequate to identify the soil and its characteristics. The source of the soil information should be identified in the field trial record. [Pg.151]

Silica has often been modified with silver for argentation chromatography because of the additional selectivity conferred by the interactions between silver and Jt-bonds of unsaturated hydrocarbons. In a recent example, methyl linoleate was separated from methyl linolenate on silver-modified silica in a dioxane-hexane mixture.23 Bonded phases using amino or cyano groups have proved to be of great utility. In a recent application on a 250 x 1-mm Deltabond (Keystone Scientific Belief onte, PA) Cyano cyanopropyl column, carbon dioxide was dissolved under pressure into the hexane mobile phase, serving to reduce the viscosity from 6.2 to 1 MPa and improve efficiency and peak symmetry.24 It was proposed that the carbon dioxide served to suppress the effect of residual surface silanols on retention. [Pg.10]

Phase 3 trials are large-scale clinical trials on populations numbering in the hundreds to thousands of patients. These are the critical trials that the drug maker runs to show that its new drug is both safe and efficacious in the target study population. If the phase 3 trials are successful, they will form the keystone elements of a New Drug Application... [Pg.3]

Eugene Dowdle. You have not mentioned the effects of Medical Aid schemes on physician-physician and physician-patient relationships. One of the keystones of the Oslerian ethic was the sense of collegiality that bound the medical profession and provided, indirectly, a form of peer review that was of benefit to both patients and to medical practitioners. Medical Aid schemes, by their monetarising effects, have done much to damage those professional bonds. [Pg.275]

Crop rotation is the keystone of organic cropping systems and its importance is emphasized by all organic crop production standards, not only for its role in crop protection, but also for its contribution to soil fertility. Soil fertility may influence the severity of disease infection or offset its effects by accelerating the build-up of yield before the disease takes its toll. This aspect is considered further in Section 18.4.4. [Pg.401]
