The conclusions we can draw primarily deal with the mechanistic duality in reactions of acetals and those factors which control the pathways. We have found that for the two limiting mechanisms operating in the reaction of acetals with allylsilanes and allylstannanes that 1) mefiyl, ethyl and isobutyl acetals react via an SN2-like mechanism with monocoordinate Lewis acids, 2) isopropyl acetals react via an SNl-hke mechanism with monocoordinate Lewis acids and 3) methyl acetals react slowly via an SNl-like mechanism with bicoordinate Lewis acids after initial formation of a stoichiometric Lewis-acid acetal complex. [Pg.261]

The mechanism of the OH-initiated oxidation of isopropyl isobutyl ether has been studied in the presence of NOj by Stemmier et al. (1997a). The major products observed, with their molar yields in parentheses, were acetone (56 4%), isopropyl formate (48 3%), isobutyl acetate (28 2%), and 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl acetate (25 10%). Smaller yields (< 10%) of isobutanal, isopropyl nitrate, 1,1,4-trimethyl-3-oxapentyl nitrate, isopropyl isobutyrate, and isobutyl formate were also observed. [Pg.330]
