Isobutyl acetate isobutyrate

Over the years a variety of uses have been found for the isobutyraldehyde by Eastman Chemical and others.219 It is converted to isobutyl alcohol, neopentyl glycol, isobutyl acetate, isobutyric acid, isobutylidenediurea, methyli-soamyl ketone, and various hydrogenation and esterification products (1.22). 

Ethyl acetate [141-78-6] is produced commercially by the Tischenko condensation of acetaldehyde using an aluminum ethoxide catalyst (60). The Tischenko reaction of acetaldehyde with isobutyraldehyde [78-84-2] yields a mixture of ethyl acetate, isobutyl acetate [110-19-0] and isobutyl isobutyrate [97-85-8] (61). 

About 69% of the total 1988 U.S. consumption of isobutyraldehyde, went into the production of isobutyl alcohol and isobutyraldehyde condensation and esterification products. The other principal isobutyraldehyde derivative markets (as a percentage of total 1988 U.S. isobutyraldehyde consumption) are neopentyl glycol (15%) isobutyl acetate (6%) isobutyric acid (5%) isobutyUdene diurea (2.5%) and methyl isoamyl ketone (1.7%). 

Isobutyl isobutyrate, the Tischenko condensation product of two molecules of isobutyraldehyde, is a slow evaporating ester solvent that has been promoted as a replacement for ethoxyethyl acetate. Although produced primarily by the acetylation of isobutyl alcohol, some isobutyl acetate is produced commercially by the crossed Tischenko condensation of isobutyraldehyde and acetaldehyde. Isobutyl acetate [110-19-0] is employed mainly as a solvent, particularly for nitrocellulose coatings.

Butyraldehyde is a reactant in the manufacture of n-butanol, 2-ethyl 1-hexanol, butylamines, and trimethylolpropane. It is used as an intermediate in the production of synthetic resins, rubber accelerators, solvents, and plasticizers. Reaction of n-butyraldehyde with polyvinyl alcohol yields polyvinyl butyral which is useful in safety glass, fabric coatings, and injection molding compositions. Isobutyraldehyde is used in the manufacture of isobutanol, neopentyl glycol, and isobutyl acetate. The isobutyraldehyde is an intermediate in the production of rubber antioxidants and accelerators, slow-release nitrogen fertilizers, and isobutyric acid.

Other esters present in high concentrations in alcohohc beverages include isoamyl acetate and isobutyl acetate (8-79) that arise, as well as ethyl acetate, by alcoholysis of acetyl-CoA through the respective alcohols. Isobutyric and isovaleric adds yield virtually no esters in beer and wine, as the non-enzymatic esterification is too slow and the equiKbrium is shifted to the detriment of esters. In spirits, these esters occur at levels up to units of mg/1.

The mechanism of the OH-initiated oxidation of isopropyl isobutyl ether has been studied in the presence of NOj by Stemmier et al. (1997a). The major products observed, with their molar yields in parentheses, were acetone (56 4%), isopropyl formate (48 3%), isobutyl acetate (28 2%), and 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl acetate (25 10%). Smaller yields (< 10%) of isobutanal, isopropyl nitrate, 1,1,4-trimethyl-3-oxapentyl nitrate, isopropyl isobutyrate, and isobutyl formate were also observed.
