Isopropyl propionate

A facile exothermic reaction, catalysed by traces of zinc chloride and iron(III) chloride (4 and 40 ppm, respectively) to produce isopropyl propionate and 2-chloropropane (b.p., 35°C) led to pressure build up and bursting of a closed galvanised drum after 24 h. Similar reactions are thermodynamically possible with other acid chlorides and ethers (particularly if secondary or tertiary alkyl ethers), so such mixtures should only be prepared immediately prior to use. 

A spin system is defined as a group of coupled protons. Clearly, a spin system cannot extend beyond the bounds of a molecule, but it may not include a whole molecule. For example, isopropyl propionate comprises two separate and isolated proton spin systems, a seven-proton system for the isopropyl residue and a five-proton system for the propionate residue, because the ester group effectively provides a barrier (5 bonds) against coupling between the two parts. 

The reaction of 1-isopropoxy-l-trimethylsiloxycyclopropane (1, R = i-Pr) with TiCl yields the titanium homoenolate of isopropyl propionate 2 (R = i-Pr) and Me3SiCl (Eq. see 9). That of 23, in contrast, yields a considerable fraction of the homoenolate of silyl propionate as well, Eq. (66) [19]. Apparently, the loss of an isopropyl group from an oxygen-stabilized cationic intermediate competes with that of the silyl group with bulky substituents.

Cleavage of -lactones.1 The blue solution of potassium-18-crown-6 in THF cleaves (3-propiolactone at -20° to furnish a dianion (1) which on protonation gives methyl acetate. A similar reaction of the (3-lactone 2 can be used to obtain isopropyl propionate (3).
