Iron casting

Depending on the concentration and form of the carbon (lamellar, spheroidal or compact), various types of cast iron may be defined lamellar iron carbon in the form of flakes nodular iron carbon in spheroidal form compact graphite iron carbon in bonded form. [Pg.15]

The classification of cast iron is often made according to its material properties  [Pg.15]

HBI has been successfully melted in cupolas (hot or cold blast), induction furnaces (coreless or channel), and electric arc furnaces. It can be a valuable charge material for ductile and malleable irons as well as steel. It is of particular value in making ductile iron castings because of its very low residual element content. [Pg.432]

Lead and its alloys are generally melted, handled, and refined in cast-iron, cast-steel, welded-steel, or spun-steel melting ketdes without fear of contamination by iron (qv). Normal melting procedures require no dux cover for lead. Special reactive metal alloys require special alloying elements, duxes, or covers to prevent dross formation and loss of the alloying elements. [Pg.55]

A second, more recently developed use for strontium metal is as an inoculant in ductile iron castings. Inoculants provide nuclei upon which graphite forms during the sohdification of cast iron, thus preventing the formation of white cast iron. Elkem Metals Company has commercialized a range of fine-sized foundry inoculants for iron castings. These inoculants, called superseed, are ferrosiUcon alloys containing 50 or 75% Si, 0.8% Sr. Most of the balance is iron. [Pg.473]

A drag chaia coaveyor coasists of a single strand of endless cast or welded steel chain that pushes or drags material through a trough. It is a simple, low cost conveyor for handling ash, coal, hot clinkers, and scrap waste materials. A variety of cast iron, cast steel, and welded steel chains are used for these conveyors. [Pg.161]

Tube material includes any that can be formed into a coil, but usually copper, copper alloys, and stainless steel are most common. The casing or shell material can be cast iron, cast steel, cast bronze, fabri-catea steel, stainless, and other high-alloy materials. Units are available with pressure vessel code conformance. [Pg.1086]

With some important exceptions, gray-iron castings generally have corrosion resistance similar to that of carbon steel. They do resist atmospheric corrosion as well as attack by natural or neutral waters and neutral soils. However, dilute acids and acid-salt solutions will attack this material. [Pg.2443]

Alloy Cast Irons Cast iron is not usually considered corrosion-resistant, but this condition can be improved by the use of various cast-iron alloys. A number of such materials are commercially available. [Pg.2443]

See Figure 12-8. Pistons may be of aluminum, built-up carbon or graphite, cast iron, cast steel, fabricated and metaUzed steel, stainless steel, or forged carbon or stainless steel. The selection involves the corrosive nature of the gas plus the weight-balancing problem of the compressor manufacturer. [Pg.378]

Materials of construction depend on the metallurgical requirements and pressure of the gas being compressed hut usually the more popular materials include cast iron, cast steel, alloy steel, or forged steel (high pressure). Figure 12-42 illustrates the extent of damage internally when materials of construction are not resistant to possible effects of internal corrosion. [Pg.459]
