Cast iron properties

Alloy cast irons. Alloy additions are made to cast irons to improve the properties for particular purposes. Alloy cast irons can be used in engineering applications where plain cast iron is unsuitable and may even replace steel for some components such as crankshafts. [Pg.85]

Alloys with other useful properties can be obtained by using yttrium as an additive. The metal can be used as a deoxidizer for vanadium and other nonferrous metals. The metal has a low cross section for nuclear capture. 90Y, one of the isotopes of yttrium, exists in equilibrium with its parent 90Sr, a product of nuclear explosions. Yttrium has been considered for use as a nodulizer for producing nodular cast iron, in which the graphite forms compact nodules instead of the usual flakes. Such iron has increased ductility. [Pg.74]

Metallurgy. The strong affinity for oxygen and sulfur makes the rare-earth metals useflil in metallurgy (qv). Mischmetal acts as a trap for these Group 16 (VIA) elements, which are usually detrimental to the properties of steel (qv) or cast iron (qv). Resistance to high temperature oxidation and thermomechanical properties of several metals and alloys are thus significantly improved by the addition of small amounts of mischmetal or its siUcide (16,17). [Pg.547]

The main use of lead metaborate is in glazes on pottery, porcelain, and chinaware, as weU as in enamels for cast iron. Other appHcations include as radiation-shielding plastics, as a gelatinous thermal insulator containing asbestos fibers for neutron shielding, and as an additive to improve the properties of semiconducting materials used in thermistors (137). [Pg.72]

Nickel—Iron. A large amount of nickel is used in alloy and stainless steels and in cast irons. Nickel is added to ferritic alloy steels to increase the hardenabihty and to modify ferrite and cementite properties and morphologies, and thus to improve the strength, toughness, and ductihty of the steel. In austenitic stainless steels, the nickel content is 7—35 wt %. Its primary roles are to stabilize the ductile austenite stmcture and to provide, in conjunction with chromium, good corrosion resistance. Nickel is added to cast irons to improve strength and toughness. [Pg.6]

Ferrophosphoms is produced as a by-product in the electrothermal manufacture of elemental phosphoms, in which iron is present as an impurity in the phosphate rock raw material. The commercial product contains ca 23—29% P and is composed primarily of Fe2P [1310-43-6] and Fe P [12023-53-9] along with impurities such as Cr and V. Ferrophosphoms is used in metallurgical processes for the addition of phosphoms content. Low concentrations (up to - 0.1%) of phosphoms in wrought and cast iron and steel not only increases the strength, hardness, and wear resistance but also improves the flow properties. In large stmctural members and plates, it is desirable to use a type of steel that does not need to be quenched or tempered, and thus does not exhibit weld-hardening. This property is afforded by the incorporation of a small quantity of phosphoms in steel. Ferrophosphoms from western U.S. phosphoms production is used as a raw material for the recovery of vanadium (see Vanadiumand vanadiumalloys). [Pg.378]

Calcium—Silicon. Calcium—silicon and calcium—barium—siUcon are made in the submerged-arc electric furnace by carbon reduction of lime, sihca rock, and barites. Commercial calcium—silicon contains 28—32% calcium, 60—65% siUcon, and 3% iron (max). Barium-bearing alloys contains 16—20% calcium, 9—12% barium, and 53—59% sihcon. Calcium can also be added as an ahoy containing 10—13% calcium, 14—18% barium, 19—21% aluminum, and 38—40% shicon These ahoys are used to deoxidize and degasify steel. They produce complex calcium shicate inclusions that are minimally harm fill to physical properties and prevent the formation of alumina-type inclusions, a principal source of fatigue failure in highly stressed ahoy steels. As a sulfide former, they promote random distribution of sulfides, thereby minimizing chain-type inclusions. In cast iron, they are used as an inoculant. [Pg.541]

States or Australia. In some cases, pot stills, arranged in cascade, are still used. The more sophisticated plants employ one or more carbon steel or cast-iron vessels heated electrically and equipped with temperature controls for both the bulk Hquid and the vessel walls. Contact time is usually 6—10 h. However, modem pitches are vacuum-distilled, producing no secondary quinoline insolubles, to improve the rheological properties. [Pg.348]

Antimony may be added to copper-base alloys such as naval brass. Admiralty Metal, and leaded Muntz metal in amounts of 0.02—0.10% to prevent dezincification. Additions of antimony to ductile iron in an amount of 50 ppm, preferably with some cerium, can make the graphite fliUy nodular to the center of thick castings and when added to gray cast iron in the amount of 0.05%, antimony acts as a powerflil carbide stabilizer with an improvement in both the wear resistance and thermal cycling properties (26) (see Carbides). [Pg.198]

Carbon is the cheapest and most effective alloying element for hardening iron. We have already seen in Chapter 1 (Table 1.1) that carbon is added to iron in quantities ranging from 0.04 to 4 wt% to make low, medium and high carbon steels, and cast iron. The mechanical properties are strongly dependent on both the carbon content and on the type of heat treatment. White cast iron is very hard (from 400 to 600 DPN) and brittle. All white cast irons are very difficult to machine and usually are finished by grinding. Table 3.3 gives properties of the four principal types of white cast irons. [Pg.56]

This type of cast iron is made by high-temperature heat treatment of white iron castings. The mechanical properties of malleable cast irons are given in Table 3.1 usually they are applied to the fabrication of conveyor chain links, pipe fittings and gears. [Pg.56]

The main advantages of austenitic cast irons are corrosion and heat resistance. For corrosion resistance, the flake and nodular are similar, but the mechanical properties of nodular cast irons are superior. Some of the commercially available austenitic cast irons are given in the Tables 3.4 and 3.5. [Pg.57]

The white cast irons and their low alloys have good abrasion resistance properties [2,3]. White cast irons are used for grinding balls, segments for mill liners and slurry pumps. In the ceramic industry they are used for muller tyres and augers in the pulp and paper industry for attrition mill plates and chip feeders and in the paint industry for balls for grinding pigments. [Pg.57]
