C (Mond process). The silver-white metal is ccp. The metal is not tarnished by air but is attacked by acids (except cone. HNO3). It is resistant to Fj. It is used extensively in alloys, particularly in steels and cast iron and as a coinage metal. Used in glass (green) in catalysts (particularly for hydrogenation). Concentrated sulphuric acid is an oxidising agent, particularly when hot, but the oxidising power of sulphuric acid decreases rapidly with dilution. The hot concentrated acid will oxidise non-metals, for example carbon, sulphur and phosphorous to give, respectively, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and phosphoric(V) acid. Among all the dichlorophenols, C H Cl O, it is 2,4-dichlorophenol that is produced in greatest quantity. 2,4-Dichlorophenol is used in manufacturing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [94-75-7] (2,4-D) and 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)propionic acid [720-36-5] (2,4-DP). Industrially, 2,4-dichlorophenol can be obtained by chlorinating phenol, -chlorophenol, o-chlorophenol, or a mixture of these compounds in cast-iron reactors. Traditionally, sodium dichromate dihydrate is mixed with 66° Bh (specific gravity = 1.84) sulfuric acid in a heavy-walled cast-iron or steel reactor. The mixture is heated externally, and the reactor is provided with a sweep agitator. Water is driven off and the hydrous bisulfate melts at about 160°C. As the temperature is slowly increased, the molten bisulfate provides an excellent heat-transfer medium for melting the chromic acid at 197°C without appreciable decomposition. As soon as the chromic acid melts, the agitator is stopped and the mixture separates into a heavy layer of molten chromic acid and a light layer of molten bisulfate. The chromic acid is tapped and flaked on water cooled roUs to produce the customary commercial form. The bisulfate contains dissolved CrO and soluble and insoluble chromic sulfates. Corrosion of industrial alloys in alkaline waters is not as common or as severe as attack associated with acidic conditions. Caustic solutions produce little corrosion on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, nickel, and nickel alloys under most cooling water conditions. Ammonia produces wastage and cracking mainly on copper and copper alloys. Most other alloys are not attacked at cooling water temperatures. This is at least in part explained by inherent alloy corrosion behavior and the interaction of specific ions on the metal surface. Further, many dissolved minerals have normal pH solubility and thus deposit at faster rates when pH increases. Precipitated minerals such as phosphates, carbonates, and silicates, for example, tend to reduce corrosion on many alloys. [Pg.185]
