Is a difference sought or is equivalence the objective International conference of harmonisation (ICH E9 ) makes it clear that it is vital that the protocol of a trial, designed to demonstrate equivalence or non-inferiority contains a clear statement that this is its explicit intention (ICH E9, Section 3.3.2). In the past if a trial failed to show that a new treatment gave benefit compared to a standard, it was commonplace to claim that the new treatment was therefore as effective as the standard. Such an argument is no longer acceptable as will be discussed in Section 8.5.6.

In 1926, the First International Conference on Bituminous Coal (ICBC) was held in Pittsburgh, PA, at the midpoint of a three-decade-long period when coal represented a commodity of immense industrial importance and an object of intense scientific interest. At that time coal was the primary fuel of industry and the source of coke for steel manufacture and of many of the chemicals upon which a great new chemical industry rested. Gasification of coal still provided most of the town gas used for many domestic and commercial purposes. Efforts to convert coal to liquid fuels used the latest advances in high-pressure technology and led to the development of metal sulfide catalysts that are still mainstays in modem petroleum refining. 

This volume is a collection of the papers presented at the 4th International Conference on DV-Xa Method (DV-Xa 2006). This conference was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan) and Sunchon National University (Korea). A subtitle set to the conference was the Industrial-Academic Cooperation Symposium and the 19th DV-Xot Annual Meeting. The primary objective of the conference was the promotion and development of science and technology on the basis of the DV-Xx molecular orbital method. 

The International Conference on Harmonisation differs from many other harmonization initiatives in that it has a recognized status and is backed by a commitment on the part of both industry and regulators, to facilitate greater harmonization of technical requirements in the three regions. Commitment to these objectives, set out in the Terms of Reference, was re-affirmed by the Steering Committee in a statement issued following the meeting held in Tokyo, October 1990. 

Advanced by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Richard P. Binzel in 1995, the Torino scale is a revision of the Near-Earth Object Hazard Index. In 1999, the International Conference on Near-Earth objects adopted the scale at a meeting in Turino (Turin), Italy (from which the name of the scale is derived). The Torino scale is used to portray the threat to Earth of an impact with a particular comet or asteroid. The measurement scale is based upon agreement between scholars as a means to categorize potential hazards. 

International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) The ICH was formed to provide an opportunity for tripartite harmonization initiatives to be developed with input from both regulatory and industry representatives. The ICH is sponsored by the European Commission, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry Associations, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Japanese Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. The objective of the ICH is to harmonize the technical requirements for the registration of pharmaceutical products in the European Union, Japan, and the United States.

Crystalline borosilicate molecular sieves have been the object of an intensive investigation effort since they were reported in the open literature at the Fifth International Conference on Zeolites by Taramasso, et al. (1) A wide range of structures containing framework boron have been synthesized. The physical properties of these borosilicate molecular sieves have been studied by such techniques as X-ray diffraction, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. In addition, the catalytic performance of borosilicate molecular sieves has been reported for such reactions as xylene isomerization, benzene alkylation, butane dehydroisomerization, and methanol conversion. This paper will review currently available information about the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of borosilicate molecular sieves. 

The most common application of FOS in process control makes use of simple on/off devices and electro-optical converters coupled directly with standard transducers. However, the latest research and development have focused on measurements of pressure, temperature, flow rate, and level, the four physical parameters for which demand is strongest. An excellent review of these sensors was published recently [159]. This review, focusing on industrial objectives, followed on the First International Conference on Optical Techniques in Process Control [160].
