Urszula Domahska has been professor. Faculty of Chemistry, Warsaw University of Technology since February 1995. She has been the Head of the Physical Chemistry Division since September 1991 and vice director of the Institute of Fundamental Chemistry (1988-1990). She had long-term scientific visits as visiting professor Laboratoire De Thermodynamique Ft D Analyse Chimique, University of Metz, France University of Turku, Finland Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, University of Natal, South Africa Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, United States. Her interests have included such areas of physical chemistry as thermodynamics, especially thermodynamics of phase equilibria, VLE, LLE, SLE, high-pressure SLE, separation science, calorimetry, correlation and prediction of physical-chemical properties, and ionic liquids. She is a member of the Polish Chemical Society member of the Polish Association of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis member of lUPAC Commission on Solubility member of International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics and scientific advisor at the Journal of Chemical Engineering Data. 

The history of chemical thermodynamics goes back 150 years and the subject has, for over a century, been the foundation for much of chemistry. This historical importance is often associated with an attitude that thermodynamics has little relevance to modern-day chemistry and will have little importance in the future development of chemistry. To counteract this, the lUPAC Commission 1.2 on Chemical Thermodynamics, published a volume entitled Chemical Thermodynamics for the 21st Century in 1999. It consisted of 27 chapters, all focusing on the applications of thermodynamics to very recent developments in chemistry. The aim was to highlight the role that thermodynamics was playing at the forefront of chemical research at the dawn of the 21st century. Three years later, in 2002, the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics, lACT, the successor to Commission 1.2, decided to publish a collection of essays on applied chemical thermodynamic topics under the same editorship.

When in 1911 the International Association of Chemical Societies was established, it naturally became a new centre for international collaboration between the European chemical societies especially in the domain of pure chemistry. Societe chimique and the Chemical Society were its co-founders, along with the Deutsche chemische Gesellschaft.

For my research activities I have received various aw ards. e.g. the Arnold-Eucken Prize in 1982 from GVC (Gesellschaft fiir Verfahrenstechnik und Chernieingenieurwe-sen), the Rossini Lecture Award 2008 from the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics and 2010 the Gmelin-Beilstein Denkmunze from GDCh (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker).

Applied Thermodynamics is published under the auspices of the Physical and Biophysical Division (I) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as a project proposed by the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics (lACT) in its capacity as an organization affiliated with lUPAC. Consequently, throughout the text we have adopted the quantities, units and symbols of physical chemistry defined by lUPAC in the text commonly known as the Green Book. We have also adopted the ISO guidelines for the expression of uncertainty and vocabulary in metrology. " Values of the fundamental constants and atomic masses of the elements have been obtained from references 21 and 22, respectively.

His awards include the SETAC Founders Award, the Honda Prize for Eco-Technology, the Order of Ontario, and the Order of Canada. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals and is a member of SETAC, the American Chemical Society, and the International Association of Great Lakes Research. 

The International Council of Chemical Associations—made up of the American Chemistry Council, the European Chemical Industry Council, and the Japan Chemical Industry Association—is the global coordinator of the Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI), a research program that funds research in the effects of chemicals on human health and the environment (LRI 2001). 

Dr. Baker has been active in the American Society of Pharmacognosy and is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society of Chemical Ecology, and Sigma Xi. He has served extensively as peer reviewer for granting agencies and journals and on advisory panels for several government agencies. He...
