After decision of order or production quantities, transportation decisions should be made. The company may have a contract with third party carriers or may use its own trucks and transportation facilities to deliver products to customers. Especially, international firms need to consider modes of transportation, inbound and outbound logistics costs. Road, railway, waterway, air, and pipelines are common modes of transportation. Intermodal transportations are possible as well. 

The regulations require that commercial motor vehicles operated in interstate or foreign commerce pass an inspection at least annually. Intermodal equipment that is interchanged or intended for interchange to motor carriers in intermodal transportation must also be inspected.

Currently, the total container turnover in the market of intermodal transport is estimated by the owners of intermodal companies over 2.5 million TEUs per year (for comparison, in 2007, there are approximately 1.7 million TEU). 

The increase in intermodal transport is a natural phenomenon in the face of the White Paper on Transport recommendations. ABSTRACT Intermodal transport is more and more popular mode of transport. There is stable increase of intermodal operation. Today the biggest container port operate more than 34 M TEUs. The complexity of the issues often results in a very selective analysis of the elements of supply chains in the context of the processes of logistics, as well as machine components, systems of traffic, so the issues related to technology. The purpose of this article is to present preliminary estimates of the causes and effects of risks occurring in the international intermodal transport, as well as evaluation of possibilities to avoid potential risks. 

So much interest in intermodal transport requires a response in the area of technological logistics cargo handling. On operations in intermodal transport is known to many studies.
