Insurance Medicare

Medicare is an entitlement program and serves all eligible beneficiaries regardless of income or medical history Like Social Securify, Medicare is based on a system of social insurance. Medicare is composed of two programs. Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. It also covers hospice care and some home health care. Part A is financed by a 1.45% payroll fax paid by bofh employees and employers (2.9% for self-employed persons). Currenf employers and employees pay for the health care of current Medicare beneficiaries, wifh the expectation that when they reach age 65 they will receive the same benefits. In the U.S., when people turn 65 years of age, they are automatically eligible for Medicare s Parf A, and they do not have to pay for the hospital insurance if they, or a spouse, paid Medicare taxes when they were working. [Pg.311]

Making prototypes and laboratory testing of polymer disks are projects that require limited cost and time duration. Certification by the FDA, on the other hand, is a long drawn out and costly process, where animal tests are followed by three phases of clinical trials, which have been described elsewhere (e.g. Suffness 1995). When the results are assessed and evaluated, a brand new product that costs more than 100 million can also run into many unforeseen problems, which makes many financiers very cautions. One of the biggest unknowns is who would pay for this costly new form of medication, and whether the medical insurance companies and Medicare would approve payment. This is the reason why so many information technology products, such as digital cameras and spreadsheets, are launched quickly, as they require much less capital to start and do not require FDA clearance. [Pg.328]

New techniques must be assessed with respect to efficiency and cost-effectiveness in comparison to already existing ones. So far only a few cost-effective analyses of management of recurrent colorectal cancer based on decision analysis models have been published. Cost calculations of two studies were based on US Medicare reimbursement rates [32-34], whereas one othereconomic analysis was performed from the French national health insurance s perspective [35]. [Pg.152]

For example, if the preferred list of drugs used by the plan (called the formulary) does not include a desired drug, participants pay the full cost. More generally, critics say that the reliance on profit-seeking insurance companies and Medicare Advantage HMOs rather than on direct government payments raises costs to elderly consumers. [Pg.84]

Congress creates Medicare, a public health insurance program for elderly persons that covers hospital stays and clinical services but not prescription drugs. [Pg.108]

To provide but one example of the many papers in the recent literature, Neumann et al. (2000) asked if pharmaceuticals were cost-effective and provided examples of current thinking in this field. These considerations will undoubtedly have an influence on the way in which Medicare and health insurance organizations calculate compensation. [Pg.392]

I I Be aware that only private companies supplement Medicare. Do not be misled that the government is protecting you when you deal with private companies. State insurance departments provide standards for insurance firms, but you are on your own when you deal with anything other than Medicare. [Pg.265]
