The parametric method is an established statistical technique used for combining variables containing uncertainties, and has been advocated for use within the oil and gas industry as an alternative to Monte Carlo simulation. The main advantages of the method are its simplicity and its ability to identify the sensitivity of the result to the input variables. This allows a ranking of the variables in terms of their impact on the uncertainty of the result, and hence indicates where effort should be directed to better understand or manage the key variables in order to intervene to mitigate downside and/or take advantage of upside in the outcome. [Pg.168]

Induction heating is used to heat steel reactor vessels in the chemical process industry (5). The heat produced in the walls is conducted to the material within. In the context of chemometrics, optimization refers to the use of estimated parameters to control and optimize the outcome of experiments. Given a model that relates input variables to the output of a system, it is possible to find the set of inputs that optimizes the output. The system to be optimized may pertain to any type of analytical process, such as increasing resolution in hplc separations, increasing sensitivity in atomic emission spectrometry by controlling fuel and oxidant flow rates (14), or even in industrial processes, to optimize yield of a reaction as a function of input variables, temperature, pressure, and reactant concentration. The outputs ate the dependent variables, usually quantities such as instmment response, yield of a reaction, and resolution, and the input, or independent, variables are typically quantities like instmment settings, reaction conditions, or experimental media. [Pg.430]

The U.S. chemical industry achieved an annual reduction of 4.2% in energy input per unit of output for the period 1975—1985 (2). This higher reduction resulted from cost optimization, the tradeoff of increased capital for reduced energy use, that was driven by energy prices (4). In contrast, from 1985 to 1990, the energy input per unit of output has been almost flat (2) as a consequence of falling prices. Introduction The model-based contfol strategy that has been most widely applied in the process industries is model predictive control (MFC). It is a general method that is especially well-suited for difficult multiinput, multioutput (MIMO) control problems where there are significant interactions between the manipulated inputs and the controlled outputs. Unlike other model-based control strategies, MFC can easily accommodate inequahty constraints on input and output variables such as upper and lower limits or rate-of-change limits. [Pg.739]

Few mechanisms of liquid/liquid reactions have been established, although some related work such as on droplet sizes and power input has been done. Small contents of surface-ac tive and other impurities in reactants of commercial quality can distort a reac tor s predicted performance. Diffusivities in liquids are comparatively low, a factor of 10 less than in gases, so it is probable in most industrial examples that they are diffusion controllech One consequence is that L/L reactions may not be as temperature sensitive as ordinary chemical reactions, although the effec t of temperature rise on viscosity and droplet size can result in substantial rate increases. L/L reac tions will exhibit behavior of homogeneous reactions only when they are very slow, nonionic reactions being the most likely ones. On the whole, in the present state of the art, the design of L/L reactors must depend on scale-up from laboratoiy or pilot plant work. [Pg.2116]

Since the reliability of gas turbines in the power industry has been lower than desired in recent years because of hot-corrosion problems, techniques have been developed to detect and control the parameters that cause these problems. By monitoring the water content and corrosive contaminant in the fuel line, any changes in fuel quality can be noted and corrective measures initiated. The concept here is that Na contaminants in the fuel are caused from external sources such as seawater thus, by monitoring water content, Na content is automatically being monitored. This on-line technique is adequate for lighter distillate fuels. For heavier fuels, a more complete analysis of the fuel should be carried out at least once a month using the batch-type system. The data should be input directly to the computer. The water and corrosion detecting systems also operate in conjunction with the batch analysis for the heavier fuels. [Pg.671]
