Numerous applications for biocides have been found in fields as diverse as ethical pharmaceuticals and cat litter products. The aim of this Cl book is two-fold to provide a comprehensive guide to the use of biocides across a range of applications and to aid in the selection of a biocide that is "fit for purpose". It covers a Cl cross-section of traditional measures, novel ideas and innovative developments, as well as addressing the biocides market, the political outlook and future trends of biocide use. 

This book emphasizes in-depth presentation of environmental pollution sources, waste characteristics, control technologies, management strategies, facility innovations, process alternatives, costs, case histories, effluent standards, and future trends for the process industry, and in-depth presentation of methodologies, technologies, alternatives, regional effects, and global effects of important pollution control practices that may be applied to the industry. This book covers new subjects as much as possible.

Two additional projects, being developed with private funding for specific market applications, are appropriate to consider as representatives of future directions and trends. These two projects are the LFR-AS-200 project being developed by Hydromine, Inc., and the Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor (SEALER) reactor project being developed by LeadCold Reactors Inc. The descriptions below are based on private communications for these ongoing development efforts and are intended to illustrate the continuing process of innovation that is characteristic of current and future trends in LFR technology. 

Future trends in research into the science and technology o-f surfactant mixtures is discussed. This is a -field rich in opportunities -for innovative scienti-fic research and also practical applications. Research in this area will dramatically increase in quantity in the next several decades and great progress in the understanding and utilisation o-f sur-factant mixtures is expected. 

Innovative methods for discerning the composition of past atmospheres are needed, since such information both tests current understanding and helps elucidate the process of atmospheric evolution. Finally, human and natural biospheric activities serve as the primary sources of both oxidant precursors and oxidant sink molecules, and the past, present, and possible future trends in these sources need to be much better quantified if we are to fully understand the oxidation processes in our atmosphere. 

This review has attempted to identify trends in innovations and recent research, and to show similar directions in several different research efforts. While new directions and new applications will quickly appear, it is hoped that the principles mentioned here will provide a framework for understanding many future developments. 

Our approach was not to hold hearings, nor to undertake major new analyses, but rather, to review existing research and to build, to the extent possible, on the many ongoing, related activities, such as the presidential Domestic Policy Review and the Committee for Economic Development s study. We prepared a variety of review and synthesis papers and assembled selected key studies from the past. We commissioned a few analytical pieces to fill in gaps in knowledge and held a meeting in December 1978 on the subject of research, innovation, and economic change. Our report attempts to present what is known about the role of innovation in the economy, past trends and the present state of the "innovation system", and the outlook and options for the future. 

The highest global consumption of any plastic coupled with the many distinct types of commercially available polyethylenes are testament to the rich history of major innovations in products, processes and breadth of applications of polyethylene. This chapter will give a historical perspective of these innovations in polyethylene including a breadth of product applications of polyethylene and the impact of metallocene polyethylenes commercialized in last 15 years. A very recent innovation of olefin block copolymers by The Dow Chemical Company will be described and some remarks will be made on future product innovations and trends. 

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in both total oxidation and combustion and also in selective oxidation. For each topic, fundamental aspects are paralleled with industrial applications. The book covers oxidation catalysis, one of the major areas of industrial chemistry, outlining recent achievements, current challenges and future opportuiuties. One distinguishing feature of the book is the selection of arguments which are emblematic of current trends in the chemical industry, such as miniaturization, use of alternative, greener oxidants, and innovative systems for pollutant abatement. Topics outlined are described in terms of both catalyst and reaction chemistry, and also reactor and process technology.
