A variety of other molecules react with group VIII complexes, and the format of this series prohibits an all-inclusive survey. This section describes reactions of selected addenda.

The Inclusion Survey, which was administered to all domestic exempt (that is, salaried) PepsiCo employees in 2001, was intended to provide a baseline regarding the evolution of the D I agenda for the organization and could be used to identify hotspots that needed to be addressed through targeted action plans in 2002 and beyond. Perhaps more important (and as noted earlier), at the time administering such a survey was also intended to communicate to employees PepsiCo s commitment to developing a more inclusive culture.

In the present work, we have tried to be as precise as possible by using literature data first, and then, systematically, our own data. Therefore, the values presented are the product of a inclusive survey of international literature, completed when necessary by as yet unpublished results. The tables of nutritional value of feedstuffs for rabbits resulting from a collaboration between several European researchers (Perez et al., 1998b) were used as the starting point for this update.

The following survey of the kinetics of dehydration of crystalline hydrates includes examples of the various types of behaviour commonly observed and unusual systems which merit inclusion in a general review. In this section (and also those which follow), the content is inevitably the product of selection since every relevant article cannot be individually cited. 

As mentioned above in the introductory section, this survey will be selective rather than all-inclusive. The Special Issue of Resource Geology on the Hishikari deposits (Shikazono et al., 1993) includes various aspects of the Hishikari deposits (oxygen isotopes of gangue minerals, hydrothermal alteration, precipitation sequence, fluid inclusions, vertical electric profiling and electric sounding surveys, structural geological analysis, opaque minerals. 

Investigations of cyanides and cyano complexes of Cd and Hg have augmented tremendously since about 1990, after detection of inclusion compounds of Cd(CN)2. A thorough review on transition-metal cyanides especially emphasizes the chemistry of inclusion compounds of both the Hofmann type (frameworks dominated by planar Ni(CN)4 building blocks) and the cyanocad-mate type (frameworks with tetrahedral Cd(CN)4 units).87 The structures of these inclusion compounds, but also of cyanides themselves, often topologically resemble the structures of minerals this aspect ( mineralomimetic chemistry ) is dealt with in a simultaneous survey.88 A more generic review of framework structures, with a section on cyanide inclusion compounds, is also to be mentioned.90... 

The question that emerges at the climax of this survey relates to the possibility of using crystalline inclusion phenomena for optical resolutions of molecular species. Can this be done effectively with suitably designed host compounds The definitely positive answer to this question has elegantly been demonstrated by Toda 20) as well as by other investigators (see Ch. 2 of Vol. 140). An optically active host compound will always form a chiral lattice. Therefore, when an inclusion type structure is induced, one enantiomer of the guest moiety should be included selectively within the asymmetric environment. 

Linear guest molecules are included along these canals in an extended planar zig-zag conformation. Branched molecules are generally excluded unless branching occurs near the end of a long linear chain, but aromatic derivatives can be included if they have a long alkyl chain 38). The review article by Takemoto and Sonoda 21) contains an excellent survey of the types of molecules known to form urea inclusion compounds and of the means used to study their detailed conformations and thermal motion. 

The dimerisation energy for derivatives of 2 (ca. 35 kJ mol-1) is considerable, particularly in relation to the strength of intermolecular forces and some persistence is required in order to isolate derivatives of 2 which do not form 7T —7r dimers in the solid state. A survey of the monomeric derivatives has been published recently.26 Since the spin density distribution in 2 is rather insensitive to chemical tuning, approaches to inhibit dimerisation rely exclusively on structural modifications, which affect the nature of the intermolecular forces. Inclusion of sterically demanding groups, such as 13, 14 and 15 has proved partially successful (in the case of the diradical 14 one ring is involved in formation of a dimer, while the other retains its open shell character). 

In the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (Fisher et al. 1998) a clinical survey aimed at determining the potential of tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention in women at increased risk, 13,338 pre- or postmenopausal women were monitored over 5 years. After randomization, women in the treatment group (n = 6681) were given a 20-mg daily dose of tamoxifen, while the remaining (n = 6707) received a placebo. Although the overall rate of fractures was about the same in both groups, tamoxifen-treated women sustained fewer hip, spine, and Colles fractures. Nevertheless, relevant data may have been biased, since in this trial there was an indiscriminate inclusion of pre- and postmenopausal women and no spinal radiographs were carried out. 

As a result of that we got involved with the state s Department of Education to produce an MCS awareness brochure that went out to all the school administrators. That work led to invitations to four pesticide conferences, and to the opportunity to work on drafting regulations for pesticide notification. We also got involved with the Department of Health and participated in an MCS prevalence study working group. One of the outcomes of that was the inclusion of questions regarding chemical sensitivity on a statewide survey. That study revealed that sixteen percent of the population in New Mexico...
