Colles fracture

In the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (Fisher et al. 1998) a clinical survey aimed at determining the potential of tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention in women at increased risk, 13,338 pre- or postmenopausal women were monitored over 5 years. After randomization, women in the treatment group (n = 6681) were given a 20-mg daily dose of tamoxifen, while the remaining (n = 6707) received a placebo. Although the overall rate of fractures was about the same in both groups, tamoxifen-treated women sustained fewer hip, spine, and Colles fractures. Nevertheless, relevant data may have been biased, since in this trial there was an indiscriminate inclusion of pre- and postmenopausal women and no spinal radiographs were carried out.

A 56-year-old 70 kg woman with a Colles fracture received a brachial plexus block at the humeral canal with 0.75% ropivacaine 40 ml using a nerve stimulator (11). The local anesthetic was administered slowly with negative intermittent aspiration. However, 15 minutes later she had two generalized convulsions, which were treated with diazepam. The total venous ropivacaine concentration measured 2 hours after the block was 2.3 gg/ml.

Symptoms of osteoporosis occur primarily due to the results of bone fractures. The most common locations for such fractures are those bones that should normally have the highest turnover rate of resorption-formation. The wrist is one such location, and a characteristic fracture of the wrist due to osteoporosis is known as a Colle s fracture.

In case of fracture of the corpora cavernosa, a significant hematoma can occur. The fascial layers of the genitalia will determine the distribution and the extent of blood extravasion.
