Where backdoor or vendor connections do exist in SCADA systems, strong authentication must be implemented to ensure secure communications. Modems, wireless, and wired networks used for communications and maintenance represent a significant vulnerability to the SCADA network and remote sites. Successful war dialing or war driving attacks could allow an attacker to bypass all other controls and have direct access to the SCADA network or resources. To minimize the risk of such attacks, disable inbound access and replace it with some type of callback system. [Pg.130]

Ideally, the most critical financial and operational key performance indicators (KPIs) centering around service level, quality, and cost should be monitored for each function, but it is important for all SCM-influenced costs to be reported to avoid distortion for example, more frequent procurement orders would reduce the cost of raw materials inventory at the expense of inbound logistics costs, and omission of the latter would give a misleading picture. [Pg.292]

Figure 1 shows the general collection setup at a typical border location. Note that inbound and outbound traffic is handled by separate routers. Access Control Lists (ACLs) are routinely used at the border to block sources or protocols deemed malicious by the customer. This data is also captured, but is segregated from the data that is routed. [Pg.211]

Assume that the distribution of orbital eccentricities is a random function of space. Then, at any position in the galaxy, there will be stars on either inbound or outbormd legs of their orbits, distributed about the mean motion at that galactocentric radius. The master equation for the stellar population of that region of the disk will be given, then, by... [Pg.514]

In addition to the nuclear source there is also clearly a distributed source above the nucleus, in the coma itself. Direct spacecraft measurements showed that two-thirds of the CO was released by Halley in the coma not directly from the nucleus (Eberhardt, 1999 Greenberg and Li, 1998). Detailed infrared observations of Hale-Bopp also showed that half of the CO was from a distributed source (Di Santi et al., 2001). These observations also showed that the distributed source turned on between 1.5 AU and 2 AU inbound and turned off at 2.2 AU outbound. The source tum-on was evidently triggered by a thermal threshold. [Pg.667]

A firewall is the equivalent of security guards at the entrance to the building. Corporate firewalls are barriers that exist between an enterprise s computer networks, or intranet, and any external network. Generally, firewalls filter inbound and outbound data, provide or manage public access to requested locations, deny all services except those explicitly permitted by the system administrator, log traffic and activity through the firewall, and activate alarms as prowlers are detected. ... [Pg.2557]

The traffic department s over-all responsibility is to procure the most economical transportation available for both manufactured goods and inbound purchased materials. The heaviest amount of the traffic department s work is with the sales department. But it must also work closely with the corporation s executive, production, purchasing, and research and development departments, as well as with accounting, treasury, advertising, and publicity. Many important changes in transportation have occurred in recent years. These have affected railroad shipments, the trucking industry, inland waterways, and ocean freight. [Pg.68]

In Chapter 3, XYZ Chemical conducted a corporate-level identification and prioritization of all worldwide hazardous material transportation activities. Based on this hazard-based prioritization activity, the chemicals listed in Table 4.3 were identified as potentially higher risk and escalated for further facilily/operational-level reviews. Facility review means the inbound and outbound hazardous material transportation activities for each XYZ Chemical plant moving these chemicals. [Pg.54]

The Japanese term kanban simply means card or ticket. They are typically enclosed in a protective vinyl cover and contain the following information part number and name, process name where the kanban is to be used, number of units in the standard conteiiner and type of packing, number of kanban cards issued, preceding process outbound stockpoint number, and subsequent process inbound stockpoint number. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the cmds themselves and the standard parts containers that they represent. Furthermore, the cmds eilways circulate together with the actual material flow. Through the kanban system, workers understand their operations procedures and standards and learn and share the information required for process control. In this way, kanban functions as an information system as well as a means of visueil control. [Pg.549]

Inbound and outbound communications form the thrust of call center operations. The Internet is forming the basis of low-cost communication for the business-to-business and consumer-to-business enterprise. EDI (electronic data interchange) was a novelty five years ago. Now consumers (and businesses who are consumers of other businesses) would probably prefer to be able to order, check order, check inventory, locate where the products are en route, pay, and follow up without having to touch or talk to a live person. [Pg.658]

Retail supply chains are different than other industry models. Many of the components of the supply chain are the same product sourcing, inbound transportation, processing, location and storage of inventory, outbound transportation, company operations, and information. However, retailers are at the end of the chain, just before the products touch the consumer. As a result, the retailer is at the end of the cumulative efficiencies and deficiencies of aU the chain partners. It may be that retail supply chains are just a bit more complex. Imagine the thousands of vendors, each with their own ideas and operations, aU moving with a thousand different retailers set of unique requirements and multiply this by the 90,000-t different stock keeping units (SKUs) in the typical large discount store. [Pg.776]

An electronics manufacturer had 400 transportation providers within its United States distribution network. Only 42 carriers delivered 98% of the volume. Of this select group. United Parcel Service was the primary carrier handling outbound ground movements, inbound shipments, ruid less-than-truckload freight to their customers or from suppliers. Due to either the physiceil product or package constraints, there were few exceptions that prevented them from having a minimum number of carriers within their distribution network. That network consisted of two plants (Syracuse, NY, euid Srilt Lake City, UT) and four distribution centers (Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, and San lose, CA). [Pg.2059]

Typical TRPM systems perform some of the same operational tasks as transportation administration and management systems but have the ability to plan and execute enterprise-wide pians rather than single business unit plans. Such systems, therefore, must consider inbound, outbound, and replenishment demands throughout a global supply chain network. [Pg.2064]

For instance, one inbound and outbound optimization planning software package has the ability to manage shipments from multiple origins to multiple destinations and builds and consolidates loads as orders are imported into the system, using a library of transportation algorithms. Combined with a costing module, it rates, ranks, and selects carriers based on customer needs. [Pg.2064]
