Immunoassay is a method that identifies and quantifies unknown analytes usiag antibody—antigen reactions. Techniques are based ia immunochemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry, with a history of development paralleling advances ia microbiology and immunology (see also Immunotherapeutic agents). 

Advances in immunology during the last part of the twentieth century have continued at a rapid rate and cytokines and immune cells having specific markers continue to be defined. A number of natural and synthetic immunotherapeutic agents have been discovered that can modulate components of the normal or aberrant immune system, through stimulation or suppression. However, most of these substances also have inherent adverse side effects.

The acquired immune system has probably received most of the attention in marine mammals, as has been the case in rodent and human immunology. Recent advances include the production of monoclonal [22-24] and polyclonal [25] antibodies to marine mammal immunoglobulins, enabling more precise, and often species-specific, reagents for the detection and quantification of antigen-specific antibodies. 

Despite developments in the field of molecular biology, virology, immunology, and pharmacology, fhe confrol of HIV-1 still awaits effective vaccines and microbicides. Because significant technological advances are still required to overcome the unique obstacles posed by HIV-1, we must find ways to scale up proven prevention strategies and also provide access to HIV treatment for the infected individuals in the world.
