This is an analysis frequently conducted on oil lubricants. Generally, the additive is known and its concentration can be followed by direct comparison of the oil with additive and the base stock. For example, concentrations of a few ppm of dithiophosphates or phenols are obtained with an interferometer. However, additive oils today contain a large number of products their identification or their analysis by IR spectrometry most often requires preliminary separation, either by dialysis or by liquid phase chromatography. [Pg.62]

FAGCI has the equipment for mass production of computer-synthesized holograms The technology of computer-synthesized holograms is widely used in Russia for protection of precious, authentic, and important documents, such as passports, securities, licenses, certificates, identification cards, etc. [Pg.268]

It is well known that the electron-impact ionization mass spectrum contains both the parent and fragment ions. The observed fragmentation pattern can be usefiil in identifying the parent molecule. This ion fragmentation also occurs with mass spectrometric detection of reaction products and can cause problems with identification of the products. This problem can be exacerbated in the mass spectrometric detection of reaction products because diese internally excited molecules can have very different fragmentation patterns than themial molecules. The parent molecules associated with the various fragment ions can usually be sorted out by comparison of the angular distributions of the detected ions [8]. [Pg.2070]

Unfortunately, in most cases not all the available information on a reaction is given in the reaction equation in a publication, and even less so in reaction databases. To obtain a fuller picture of the reaction that was performed, the text describing the experimental procedure in the publication or a lab journal) would have to be consulted. Reaction products that are considered as trivial, such as water, alcohol, ammonia, nitrogen, etc., are generally not included in the reaction equation or mentioned in the text describing the experimental work. This poses serious problems for the automatic identification of the reaction center. It is highly desirable to have the full stoichiometry of a reaction specified in the equation. [Pg.171]

Identification of Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Picric acid combines with many aromatic hydrocarbons, giving addition products of definite m.p. Thus with naphthalene it gives yellow naphthalene picrate, C oHg,(N08)jCeHiOH, m.p. 152°, and with anthracene it gives red anthracene picrate, C 4Hio,(NOj)jCeHjOH, m.p. 138 . For practical details, see p. 394. [Pg.174]

Many of these are crystalline compounds of sharp m.p. and are therefore useful for identification and characterisation. These include the condensation products with ... [Pg.341]

The residue in the flask will contain the sodium (or potassium) salt of the acid together with excess of alkali. Just acidify with dilute sulphuric acid and observe whether a crystalline acid separates if it does, filter, recrystallise and identify (Section 111,85). If no crystaUine solid is obtained, the solution may be just neutralised to phenolphthalein and the solution of the alkali salt used for the preparation of a crystaUine derivative. This wiU confirm, if necessary, the results of hydrolysis by method 1. If the time factor is important, either method 1 or the product of the caustic alkali hydrolysis may be used for the identification of the acid. [Pg.391]

Sixteen isotopes of fermium are known to exist. 257Fm, with a half-life of about 100.5 days, is the longest lived. 250Fm, with a half-life of 30 minutes, has been shown to be a decay product of element 254-102. Chemical identification of 250Fm confirmed the production of element 102 (nobelium). [Pg.212]

Nitration at a rate independent of the concentration of the compound being nitrated had previously been observed in reactions in organic solvents ( 3.2.1). Such kinetics would be observed if the bulk reactivity of the aromatic towards the nitrating species exceeded that of water, and the measured rate would then be the rate of production of the nitrating species. The identification of the slow reaction with the formation of the nitronium ion followed from the fact that the initial rate under zeroth-order conditions was the same, to within experimental error, as the rate of 0-exchange in a similar solution. It was inferred that the exchange of oxygen occurred via heterolysis to the nitronium ion, and that it was the rate of this heterolysis which limited the rates of nitration of reactive aromatic compounds. [Pg.11]

NMR IR UVVIS and MS) were obtained using pure substances It is much more common however to encounter an organic substance either formed as the product of a chemical reaction or iso lated from natural sources as but one component of a mixture Just as the last half of the twentieth cen tury saw a revolution in the methods available for the identification of organic compounds so too has it seen remarkable advances in methods for their separation and purification... [Pg.572]

Finally, note that the ions produced by the combined inlet and ion sources, such as electrospray, plasmaspray, and dynamic FAB, are normally molecular or quasi-molecular ions, and there is little or none of the fragmentation that is so useful for structural work and for identifying compounds through a library search. While production of only a single type of molecular ion may be useful for obtaining the relative molecular mass of a substance or for revealing the complexity of a mixture, it is often not useful when identification needs to be done, as with most general analyses. Therefore,... [Pg.263]

Accordingly, the product 6A is about the same as Vj, the volume of the hole. For liquids of low molecular weight, is on the order of 0.5% the volume of the liquid at room temperature, increasing to 2-3% at the boiling point, and larger yet at still higher temperatures. This identification makes 6 A easier to visualize, but it still leaves us with four parameters kj, 6, X, and. ... [Pg.97]

Ion exchange (qv see also Chromatography) is an important procedure for the separation and chemical identification of curium and higher elements. This technique is selective and rapid and has been the key to the discovery of the transcurium elements, in that the elution order and approximate peak position for the undiscovered elements were predicted with considerable confidence (9). Thus the first experimental observation of the chemical behavior of a new actinide element has often been its ion-exchange behavior—an observation coincident with its identification. Further exploration of the chemistry of the element often depended on the production of larger amounts by this method. Solvent extraction is another useful method for separating and purifying actinide elements. [Pg.214]

Monobasic acids are determined by gas chromatographic analysis of the free acids dibasic acids usually are derivatized by one of several methods prior to chromatographing (176,177). Methyl esters are prepared by treatment of the sample with BF.—methanol, H2SO4—methanol, or tetramethylammonium hydroxide. Gas chromatographic analysis of silylation products also has been used extensively. Liquid chromatographic analysis of free acids or of derivatives also has been used (178). More sophisticated hplc methods have been developed recentiy to meet the needs for trace analyses ia the environment, ia biological fluids, and other sources (179,180). Mass spectral identification of both dibasic and monobasic acids usually is done on gas chromatographicaHy resolved derivatives. [Pg.246]
