Among common carbon-carbon bond formation reactions involving carbanionic species, the nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides with active methylene compounds in the presence of a base, e. g., malonic and acetoacetic ester syntheses, is one of the most well documented important methods in organic synthesis. Ketone enolates and protected ones such as vinyl silyl ethers are also versatile nucleophiles for the reaction with various electrophiles including alkyl halides. On the other hand, for the reaction of aryl halides with such nucleophiles to proceed, photostimulation or addition of transition metal catalysts or promoters is usually required, unless the halides are activated by strong electron-withdrawing substituents [7]. Of the metal species, palladium has proved to be especially useful, while copper may also be used in some reactions [81. Thus, aryl halides can react with a variety of substrates having acidic C-H bonds under palladium catalysis. [Pg.213]

The two advantages of dosimeters derive from the fact that the final signal represents a record of total exposure over a given period. The dosimeter need not be continuously monitored, reducing power requirements substantially and a permanent record is available for documentation, important for such plications as health and safety monitoring. To obtain a comparable total-exposure record for reversible sensors requires maintaining a continuous record of response data for the entire time period of interest. [Pg.242]

No recent data documenting import or export volumes of nitrobenzene were located. However, it is estimated that these quantities are negligible, based on the 1978 import volume of 38 kkg and 1980 export volume of 36 kkg, which represent less than 1% of United States production during those years (Collins et al. 1982). [Pg.52]

Providing brief, accurate, and informative documentation that includes both counseling and medication interventions requires skill and training. Social workers must learn to document important information that will assist the medication prescriber and other health care and mental health... [Pg.68]

Surface diffusion as a solid-phase process is conceptually similar to those discussed above, except that it involves the movement of heteroatoms rather than carbon atoms. Oxygen and hydrogen are of special interest, because of the widely documented importance of their spillover on the carbon surface. Indeed, the phenomenon of spillover was first observed on the surface of a channel carbon black [238]. [Pg.31]

After a number of preparatory meetings in 1969 and 1970, NASA published on 2 February, 1971 a document important to workers in all disciplines. The summary page at the end of this section should appear at the top of all applications for participation p. 6 of Preparation of proposal for investigation using data from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS 1) and Skylab (EREP) ... [Pg.147]

Currently, the elaboration of methods for the objective control of the authenticity of important documents, such as passports, securities, licenses, certificates, identification cards, etc., is being intensively developed. [Pg.264]

We are confident that any user of this combined evaluation technique, as well as the development of future test standards for manual ultrasonic testing will benefit from this result, because it allows a greater flexibility in the applicable method without loosing reliability. Often an expensive production of a reference block can be avoided and therefore testing costs are reduced. Since all calculations are performed by a PC, the operator can fully concentrate on his most important duty scanning the workpiece and observing the A-scan. Additional time will be saved for the test documentation, since all testing results are stored in the instrument s memory (the PC s hard drive) with full link to the Software World (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.). [Pg.818]

Quality control encompasses all activities used to bring a system into statistical control. The most important facet of quality control is written documentation, including statements of good laboratory practices, good measurement practices, standard operating procedures, and protocols for a specific purpose. [Pg.722]

Early scientific studies were ptedominandy aimed at objects often referred to as belonging to the fine arts. Subsequendy, equal importance and effort has been attached to studies of objects of cultural and historical interest, such as archaeological and ethnographic materials, or manuscripts, documents, photographs, and books in archives andUbraries. This article is meant to be inclusive of all such objects as well as of fine arts objects. The term art object when used is an inclusive, generic connotation rather than an exclusive one. [Pg.416]

Personal computers have introduced new ways to handle pdvate biblographic and text files. The most important factors to consider to achieve satisfactory results in building a bibhographic or text database are the type of information to be stored and the needs of the user. Types of information include correspondence, research results and documentation, meeting notes, and bibliographic references. Needs of the user to be considered should include the potential number of users of the database, restrictions for the access and display of the information because of privacy or proprietary reasons, and the retrieval mechanisms (eg, by keyword, authority list, controUed vocabulary, author, tide, date, or other document or information attributes). In addition, criteria for selecting and encoding information for the database need to be established. [Pg.131]

The importance of an accurate and complete record of invention caimot be underestimated. The record of invention should serve as the basic document for estabUshing the date of conception and reduction to practice of the invention. The U.S. PTO issues patents to those who are first to invent. In a contest over inventorship, any available record of invention is submitted to the U.S. PTO to estabUsh proof of an inventor s rights. As of January 1, 1996, any inventor from a country belonging to the World Trade Organization may use such evidence before the U.S. PTO. Previously, this type of proof could be rehed upon only if the activity, documented in the notebook, record, etc, was undertaken in the United States. Similarly, activity undertaken after December 8, 1993 in Mexico or Canada may also be rehed upon to prove inventorship. [Pg.32]

Other organi2ations have assumed important positions in the field of patent documentation. IFl/Plenum Data Corp. (formerly Information for Industry) began in 1955 to index U.S. chemical patents by the Uniterm Index system. Uniterm indexing was eventually extended back to 1950. The acquisition in 1971 of Du Font s in-house indexing system and staff resulted in a more powerful system, the Comprehensive Data Base (CDB), which now covers U.S. chemical patents frommid-1964 to date. [Pg.48]

Derwent Information Ltd. Derwent Information Ltd., previously known as Derwent PubHcations Ltd., changed its name in the 1990s to reflect more accurately the fact that its products go far beyond traditional pubHcations. Derwent provides a wide spectmm of information products and services, many of them relating to patents. Derwent also produces important databases (qv) of nonpatent information from the pharmaceutical and agncultural chemical Hterature. These products and services encompass alerting tools for current awareness, systems for retrospective search and retneval, and means for document deHvery and archiving. [Pg.51]

A distinct difference between examiners citations on granted U.S. patents and those on pubHshed patent appHcations is that the latter can indeed represent direct anticipation. Thus they represent a close subject relationship to the document in question. An important factor in the citations on EPO and PCT appHcations is that they are categorized by the examiner with regard to their relevance documents of particular relevance in themselves, documents of particular relevance in combination with some other document(s), and documents defining the general state of the art but of no particular relevance in themselves. Clearly not aH citations have the same value. [Pg.58]
