Hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium

The first studies of the effect of micelles on the exchange of matter to interfaces subject to harmonical disturbances of the surface area were performed by Lucassen (1976). He used an aqueous solution of hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium propanesulfonate (HOPS) below and above the CMC. The exchange of matter, shown by the effective dilational elasticity E, is affected considerably by the presence of micelles, as discussed above. The lower the frequency of disturbance, the more pronounced is the influence of micelle kinetics on the exchange of matter (cf. Fig. 6.12), the line marks the CMC of HDPS. Lucassen was able to describe the behaviour by using the theory given by Eqs (6.25), (6.26)).

The produced quinone makes black complexes within the original hydroquinone very easily. As shown in Figure 4.48, when the crystals of hydroquinone and quinone are placed separately, the dark-violet crystals of the complex, which are called quinhydron, appear between the two crystalline samples. We tried to stabilize hydroquinone by making complexes with various surfactant molecules containing quaternary ammonium salts, such as alkyltrimethylammonium halides, benzyl(alkyl)dimethyl-ammonium chloride, and ethyl(hexadecyl)dimethylammonium bromide (ECDAB). After many trials, complex crystals suitable for X-ray analysis were formed with benzyl(hexadecyl)dimethylammonium chloride (BCDAC) and ECDAB, as shown in Figure 4.49. 

Consequently, complex formation of hydroquinone with surfactant molecules was investigated. In this section, four surfactant molecules with different alkyl chains are described, because they are considered to be safe for human health. Goldfarb et al. (65) discovered how to monitor the synthesis of MCM-41 in the liquid/solid phase by EPR spectroscopy using a nitroxide radical, 4-(A, A -dimethyl-A -hexadecyl)-ammonium-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidinyloxy iodide (CAT16), as probe molecule. This nitroxide has a structure similar to that of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), which was used as surfactant in the synthesis of MCM-41 (Fig. 7). Thus, it was shown to be the best suited to monitor the formation process of MCM-41. Because the synthesis was performed at room temperature, commercial flat cells could be used for EPR measurements without the need for further heating.

In this technique, two types of reactants are placed separately in two immiscible solvents, one of which is water. Spin probes at the fast motional limit have also been utilized in studies of heterogeneous molecular assembly by HF EPR. Cramer et al. utilized the spin probe TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperedine-l-oxyl) to investigate poly(butylacrylate) and poly(butylmethacrylate) films. The same spin probe was also used by Smirnov and co-workers to study rotational diffusion of the nitroxide in two phases of aqueous phospholipid dispersions with W-band EPR. Bakker and co-workers utilized another probe - 4-[N,N-dimethyl-lV-(n-hexadecyl)ammonium]-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-iV-oxyl (HTAB ) to study absorption and aggregation of cetylpyridinium chloride and cetylpyridin-ium salicylate (CPSa) on silica nanoparticles. From W-band line width analysis it was concluded that CPSa on silica surfaces forms two coexisting aggregate phases, one which excludes HTAB and one in which HTAB is concentrated.
