A simple method of modifying promoiety acidity or basicity is to select other more acidic or basic ionizable functional groups. Convenient solubilizing moieties for ester prodrugs where the formulation pH should be between 3.5 and 5 would be those containing eithersulfonicKypid or tertiary amine ( ia > 8) functionalities. The reaction of higher alkyl chlorides with tin metal at 235°C is not practical because of the thermal decomposition which occurs before the products can be removed from the reaction zone. The reaction temperature necessary for the formation of dimethyl tin dichloride can be lowered considerably by the use of certain catalysts. Quaternary ammonium and phosphonium iodides allow the reaction to proceed in good yield at 150—160°C (109). An improvement in the process involves the use of amine—stannic chloride complexes or mixtures of stannic chloride and a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound (110). Use of these catalysts is claimed to yield dimethyl tin dichloride containing less than 0.1 wt % trimethyl tin chloride. The most successful of these products contain high ratios of VP to DMAEMA and are partially quatemized with diethyl sulfate (Polyquaternium 11) (142—144). They afford very hard, clear, lustrous, nonflaking films on the hair that are easily removed by shampooing. More recendy, copolymers with methyl vinyl imidazoliiim chloride (Polyquaternium 16) (145) or MAPTAC (methacrylamidopropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride) (Polyquaternium 28) have been introduced. Disinfectants. Several disinfecting agents can be used in hatcheries and two are of particular interest. Because they are not considered dmg or food additive uses by FDA, povidone—iodine compounds can be used to disinfect the surface of eggs (9). Benzalkonium chloride [68424-85-1] and benzethonium chloride (quaternary ammonium compounds), are allowed at 2 mg/L by FDA to disinfect water containing fish. These compounds are also known to have therapeutic properties, especially against external bacteria (9). [Pg.322]
