Since the early 1940s, insecticides have been of immeasurable value in curbing the ravages of insect pests. In the words of the National Academy of Sciences "...when their use is approached from sound ecological principles, chemical pesticides provide dependable and valuable tools for the biologist. Their use is indispensable in modem society. There are many problems of insect pest control for which the use of chemicals provides the only acceptable solution. Chemical pesticides will continue to be one of the most dependable weapons for the entomologist for the foreseeable future" (6).

Even though exposure to environmental agents such as agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and radiation has been associated with leukemia, none of these agents is linked conclusively with the development of leukemia. An increased frequency of ALL is associated with higher socioeconomic status. It is postulated that less social contact in early infancy and thus a late exposure to some common infectious agents may have some impact.7 In most individual instances, there is no reasonable or obvious explanation for the development of leukemia. 

Today, marketing a new insecticide can take a decade, but Geigy did it in three years. In 1942, Geigy sold almost a pound per capita of DDT-laced insecticide in Switzerland and saved the country s wartime potato crop from a heavy infestation of Colorado beetles. With the discoveries of organophosphate in Germany and chlorinated hydrocarbons like DDT in Switzerland, the era of synthetic chemical pesticides had begun.

Synthesis of Subsection 3.2.4 - Only a minor fraction of sprayed pesticides hits the intended target, while most of them pollute the environment however, pesticides cannot be abandoned. IPM helps to enormously reduce their use and is presently progressing towards the proactive approach . It is impossible to totally ban chemical pesticides, also because botanicals and the other pesticides permitted by organic agriculture are less effective and/or more polluting. One major problem is the determination of threshold values for the treatments.
