The diffraction pattern consists of a small number of spots whose symmetry of arrangement is that of the surface grid of atoms (see Fig. IV-10). The pattern is due primarily to the first layer of atoms because of the small penetrating power of the low-energy electrons (or, in HEED, because of the grazing angle of incidence used) there may, however, be weak indications of scattering from a second or third layer.

Provide Only the Heating or Cooling Actually Heeded. Generally, the supply temperature of hot and cold air, or water, should be reset according to actual need. This is especially important on systems or 2ones that allow simultaneous hea ting and cooling.

If the products of electrolysis favor other types of corrosion, electrochemical protection processes should not be applied or should be used only in a limited form. Coatings of less noble metals than the substrate metal (e.g., Zn on Fe) are only protective if the corrosion product of the metal coating restricts the corrosion process. At the same time, the formation of aeration cells is hindered by the metal coating. No corrosion occurs at defects. Additional cathodic protection to reduce the corrosion of the metal coating can be advantageous. The passivating current density and the protection current requirement increase with increased temperature, while the passive range narrows. Preliminary assessments for a potential-controlled installation can be deduced from such curves. 

Turboexpander designs heeding these design eoneerns have proven to be exeeptionally suited for geothermal applieations. Continuous operation for several years without repairs is not unusual. 

In an operating plant, the air rate can be adjusted at fixed heat output (constant steam rate for a boiler) until minimum fuel rate is achieved. This is the optimum so long as the warnings below ai e heeded.
