Heat waves

During prolonged heat waves which can cause blackouts and brownouts, electric utilities always request that customers limit energy consumption by raising thermostats and turning off the air conditioning when not home. It is uncertain if these requests are heeded, and if they arc, it is uncertain whether conformity is out of altruism (help the utilities) or self-interest (save money). [Pg.136]

Since optical-alignment systems are dependent on the transmission of a laser beam, which is a focused beam of light, they are susceptible to problems in some environments. Heat waves, steam, temperature variations, strong sunlight, and dust can distort the beam. When this happens, the system will not perform accurately. [Pg.924]

Irritation of the vein used for administration, tingling, a metallic or chalky taste, and heat waves may occur when calcium is given IV Rapid IV administration (calcium gluconate) may result in bradycardia, vasodilation, decreased blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and... [Pg.640]

The predictions for almost all communities in Canada include more violent winter storms, very high intensity rainfalls of short-duration, and extended heat waves with the accompanying increased risk of smog, wildfires, tree parasites, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Current structural design, farming,... [Pg.51]

Increased Heat Waves and More Severe Precipitation Events due to Global Warming. [Pg.64]

But, in other areas there could be drier midsummer conditions in the midlatitudes, increased probability of extreme heat waves and an increased probability of fires in drier/hotter regions. Increased sea levels over the next century could also be expected, the estimates here vary from several inches to several feet. [Pg.62]

Temperature extremes show the most distinct trend. Climate models show a more significant increase in absolute maximum temperatures than in the mean daily maximum. According to this scenario, conditions like those of the 2003 summer heat wave will occur every few decades in the case of medium warming, and every few years in the case of strong warming. [Pg.67]

Accdg to Dunkle (Ref 12), when a detonation encounters an SPHF ( shock-pass-heat-filter ), [described in Ref 40 under DETONATION (AND EXPLOSION), EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES and briefly in the book of Cook (Ref 6, p 83)], a barrier which stops the heat wave but lets the shock wave pass thru, a predetonation regime builds up again behind the shock,... [Pg.482]

Another phenomenon associated with a crude oil fire is stopover. Basically, die same principles that are responsible for a boilover are the cause of a stopover. The fundamental difference is that in a stopover the reaction is from water that has entered the tank since the start of the fire. Usually this introduction is die result of firefighting activities. A slopover will occur at some point after the heat wave lias been formed. Eidier the water from the hose streams or, after the bubbles collapse, the water in the foam will sink into the oil, contacting the heat wave, where it is converted to steam, and die agitation of the liquid surface spills some amount of oil over the tank rim. [Pg.195]

As the star expands, the photosphere becomes deeper as the recombination front proceeds through the hydrogen-rich envelope deeper in mass. At the same time a heat wave is propagating out from the interior. At a certain stage, energy flux due to radioactive decays exceeds that from shock heating. The dates when the radioactivity starts to dominate and when the luminosity reaches its peak depend on the above three factors as follows. [Pg.327]
