Hard paraffin

Paraffin (Paraffin wax. Hard paraffin). A mixt of solid hydrocarbons having the general formula CnH2n+2, obtained from petroleum. Colorl or white somewhat translucent, tasteless, odorless solid greasy feel bums with a luminous flame. [Pg.483]

Krupp-Kohlechemie A process for making hard paraffin wax from water gas by a variant of the Fischer-Tropsch process. The products were called Ruhrwachse. Developed by Ruhr Chemie and Lurgi Ges. fur Warmetechnie. [Pg.158]

Synthetic hard paraffin. This includes mixtures of high molecular weight, solid, purified, mainly straightchain hydrocarbons with solidification temperatures between 92 and 105 °C. [Pg.47]

Barriers can conveniently be made of strips of plate glass, not less than 1 cm. wide and a few mm. thick, so as to be heavy. They must be coated, after cleaning, with a good hard paraffin wax. [Pg.28]

The tops of the sides of the trough should be several millimetres wide at least, and ground fiat, so that the barriers fit them. Both the tops of the sides of the trough, and if desired the whole surface of the trough, must be covered with hard paraffin wax. This is easily painted on from benzene solution, and adheres best if the trough is heated sufficiently for the wax to be molten. The function of the wax is to provide a non-wetting layer, over which the water... [Pg.28]

Many oils, particularly those of vegetable origin, are liable to autooxidation with subsequent rancidity, and it is frequently necessary to add an antioxidant and/or preservative to inhibit this degradation process. For externally applied emulsions, mineral oils, either alone or combined with soft or hard paraffins, are widely used both as the vehicle for the drug and for their occlusive and sensory characteristics. The most widely used oils in oral preparations are non-biodegradable mineral and castor oils that provide a local laxative effect, and fish liver oils or various fixed oils of vegetable origin (e.g., arachis, cottonseed, and maize oils) as nutritional supplements. [Pg.1551]

Hard paraffin is a mixture of solid hydrocarbons, also known as paraffin wax. It is used to stiffen ointments and creams and to coat capsules and tablets. At one time it was used for cosmetic enhancement, for example of the breasts, before silicone was introduced. It is also used in bismuth iodoform paraffin paste (BIPP) (see the monograph on bismuth). [Pg.2693]

When isopropyl myristate comes into contact with rubber, there is a drop in viscosity with concomitant swelling and partial dissolution of the rubber contact with plastics, e.g. nylon and polyethylene, results in swelling. Isopropyl myristate is incompatible with hard paraffin, producing a granular mixture. It is also incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. [Pg.375]

Melt hard paraffin, white wax, and hydrogenated castor oil in the fat-melting vessel at 100°C and maintain this temperature for 20 minutes. Then transfer this melted mass to the manufacturing vessel preheated to 85°C through 0.150 mm. Cool to 33°C while stirring. [Pg.122]

Melt microcrystalline wax, hard paraffin, and sorbitan sesquioleate in a fat-melting vessel at 70°-75°C while mixing. Add liquid paraffin and mix well. [Pg.159]

Paraffin. Paraffin wax hard paraffin. A mixture of solid hydrocarbons having the general formula CnH2a+I, obtained from petroleum. [Pg.1111]

Immerse tissue four times in hard paraffin (melting point = 56-57°C), which is heated and maintained at 60°C. Embed in paraffin. [Pg.53]

Paraffin waxes are hydrocarbons with short (Cis) carbon chains. In pharmacy preparation the solid (Hard paraffin), liquid (Liquid paraffin and Light liquid paraffin) and soft type (White soft paraffin and Yellow soft paraffin) are used. They have a role in cutaneous preparations (see Sects. 12.7.9, 12.7.12, and 12.7.13) and eye ointments (see Sect. 10.7.3). [Pg.477]
