During electrolysis there is no change in composition of an individual melt close to the electrode surfaces only its quantity (volume) will change. The resulting void space is filled again by flow of the entire liquid melt mass. This flow replaces the diffusional transport of ions customarily associated with aqueous solutions. This has particular consequences for the method used to measure ionic transport numbers ... [Pg.133]

ISO 11357 2005 Plastics - Determination of the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and the melt-volume flow rate (MVR) of thermoplastics. International Organization for Standardization, Geneva, Switzerland. [Pg.448]

Scale-up of gas atomizers is difficult and it requires the use of higher gas-to-melt mass flow rate ratio to maintain the same droplet size. The scale-up may also cause some complex phenomena to occur, such as the disappearance of the prefilming effect in close-coupled atomizers, the generation of turbulence in melt flow within delivery nozzle, and change in atomization mechanisms. [Pg.87]

At high discharge pressures, the pellets exit the device hot enough to form a sintered mass, as shown in Fig. 5.17(a) for PS resin. In this case, the temperature of the outside of the pellets exceeded the Tg of the resin and as the resin exited the device the pellets cohesively attached to one another. In most cases, the device was stopped and the melted masses were removed. [Pg.155]

We now need to find the variation of the bulk partition coefficient D as a function of the degree of melting. Mass balance of mineral i gives... [Pg.64]

Some nitric acid is used for the manufacture of explosives and chemicals, but much is converted on-site to the potentially explosive high nitrogen fertilizer ammonium nitrate (Section 2.11). Ammonia gas from the Haber plant is absorbed in aqueous HN03, and the NH4N03 solution is evaporated to a liquid melt (< 8% H20) for crystallization, but care must be taken to keep the pH of the solution above about 4.5 and to exclude any material (chlorides, organic compounds, metals) that might catalyze the explosive decomposition of NH4N03. It is also wise to keep the melt mass low and to vent it to avoid pressure buildup. The solid product should be stored well away from the main plant. [Pg.184]

Continual rotation of the melted mass is the principal point to be attended to in most of the glass-blower s operations but these will bo best described in connection with the special manufacture of the different varieties of glass,... [Pg.208]

The melted mass, after being cold, is as hard and porous as pumice stone, and is grained with difficulty but there is a stage when it is cooling in which it is very crumbly, and it should then be powdered upon a board, with a small wooden cylinder, and put up hot, without sorting the grains or even sifting out the flour. [Pg.31]

The reader should realize that the above analysis has several serious faults. It does not take into account the transient nature of the incident heat flux or the many complications involved in the melting mass-transfer process which occurs at the surface. Some of these problems are discussed by Dorrance [12]. [Pg.624]

Because the performance within the extmder and the nature of the post-die extru-date will be influenced by the properties of the final viscous fluid produced, many workers have attempted to characterise the rheology of this melted mass (e.g., Jao et al. 1978 Akdogan et al. 1997). Since its stmcture is either that of a polymer melt or a dispersion of highly swollen particles within a polymer melt, then complex... [Pg.420]

Heat a mixture of 10 gm. of sodium nitrate (or potassium nitrate) and 20 gm. of lead in a sand bath pan, which stands on a tripod, or similar support. Stir the melted mass with a stiff iron wire or blunt glass rod. Some of the lead will disappear and a yellowish brown powder will be seen in the molten mass. The action should proceed until most of the lead has disappeared. Allow the mass to cool, transfer to a mortar, pulverize, add hot water, and filter the clearer portion add more hot water to the residue and filter this portion. Add to the combined filtrates a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid. Describe the result. Compare the result with the action of concentrated sulphuric acid on a solution of sodium nitrite. Is the white residue (produced in the ignition tube) a nitrate Why ... [Pg.198]

While many refractory peridotites were likely produced by melt-rock reactions at nearly constant or increasing melt mass (Kelemen, 1990 Kelemen et al., 1990), some fertile peridotites were conversely refertUized as the result of the solidification of infiltrated melt (a process also referred to as percolative fractional crystallization by Harte et al., 1993). (Re)fertilization processes have been invoked for several types of orogenic, ophiolitic, and oceanic peridotites, such as ... [Pg.825]

Data sources and calculations as in Table 2(a). Concentration ranges in fluids and concentrations in melts shown in Figure 12, are calculated as flux divided by water/melt mass. [Pg.1881]

Preliminary experiments on the ultrasonic treatment of solidifying precise castings (into ceramic molds) have shown that significant warming of a melt in a mold occurs with development of cavitation and introduction of acoustic power above 100 W. As the volume of a casting is not large and the melt mass is hardly above 0.2 kg, the data obtained allow one to follow the improved filling of thick channels under ultrasonic action. [Pg.147]
