Personal hygiene is also important in minimizing exposure levels to harmful chemicals. Contaminated clothing should be immediately removed and laundered or disposed of. Absorbent articles of clothing such as belts and shoes are particularly troublesome. Provisions should be made for storage, laundering, and disposal of contaminated clothing. 

When one comes into contact with epoxy resins or any of the chemicals used with epoxy resins, he or she should immediately wash off any components that get on the skin. Do not use solvents for personal clean-up, but use soap and water or a commercial cleaner. Particular attention needs to paid to fingernails and the area around the nail bed. After washing, a skin conditioner or lotion should be used to help keep the skin in good condition and protected. 

Good housekeeping also maintains that separate eating, drinking, and smoking facilities should be maintained that are isolated from the workplace. Refrigerators and freezers used for the storage of epoxy adhesive components must not be used to store edible items or drinks. 

1 Policy. Waste minimisation should be a cornerstone of any company s Environmental Policy Statements (EPS). Each company in the UK, by now, should have a published EPS and all employees should be aware of the implications. Responsibility for the implementation of the policy rests with line management and specific responsibilities should be assigned to specific individuals. No level of exhortation to the work force to go out and minimise waste will achieve results unless there is a managed system in place which allows ideas to be pursued and supplemented.

For each geographical or fundamental area within the company a waste minimisation officer (WMO) should be appointed with the role of coordinating ideas, actions and monitoring progress. 

The waste minimisation exercise is not a one-off activity but should be part of a continuously evolving process. Operations should be reviewed at regular intervals since processes and practices do change and inefficiencies creep in to routine operations. The easy problems will be dealt with fairly rapidly but the more difficult areas will need on-going attention with less spectacular results being achieved. Maintaining the

Good housekeeping practices are key to minimizing losses and preventing fugitive emissions. Losses and emissions are minimized by enclosed buildings, covered conveyors and transfer points, and dust collection equipment. Yards should be paved and runoff water routed to settling ponds. 

Attention to good housekeeping practices often reduces water usage and, in turn, the amount of wastewater passing to drains.

Whether floor space is a major factor in the design of a particular plant depends on the value of land near the proposed site. The engineer should, however, allot floor space economically, consistent with good housekeeping in the plant and should be sure to consider line flow of materials, access to equipment, space to permit working on parts of equipment that need frequent servicing, and the safety and comfort of the operators. 

Energy can be conserved by operation of plant in such a way as to minimize part loading. Various practices can be adopted that can be described as good housekeeping . In addition to maintenance, this will include such factors as the avoidance of plant operating in the standby mode for long periods, operation at correct temperature, ensuring doors are closed where applicable, etc. 

Cleanliness and good housekeeping in machine shops do much to avoid bacterial infection, and their importance cannot be overstressed. Various techniques such as heat treatment, centrifuging and filtration can be used to advantage, although economic considerations may restrict their use to systems containing large volumes of soluble oil. Chemical sterilization with bactericides can be more convenient. 

Good housekeeping can play a major part in maintaining a safe and environmentally sound place of work. Tripping over material not tidied away causes many accidents. Another source of potential injury is in the lack of secure storage of cleaning equipment, tools, etc. 

Preventive measures include everything from safe work practices to training programs, good housekeeping, regular audits, administrative and engineering controls, and chemical-protection equipment. 

With regard to operational considerations, the recirculation pump pressure gauges (which measure pressure differentials and consequently indicate possible blockage in the coiled tube) require frequent calibration. Regular cleaning and good housekeeping are also required, especially within the furnace area.
