Pump, recirculation

A flow diagram of a simple cross-flow system is shown in Figure 16.12. This is the system likely to be used for batch processing or development rigs it is in essence a basic pump recirculation loop. The process feed is concentrated by pumping it from the tank and across the membrane in the module at an appropriate velocity. The partly concentrated retentate is recycled into the tank for further processing while the permeate is stored or discarded as required. The extractor can run as a deep bed or as a shallow bed. Usually, the bed depth is intermediate. There are several miscella stages and a hnal hexane wash (Figure 24). It was believed that this could be achieved commercially by a pumped recirculation of some of the exhaust gases and/or reducing the furnace purge of N2. However, contamination with sodium, which was evolved in the HT furnace when using Courtauld s SAF precursor, could make this impracticable. Work was also undertaken at Harwell to produce carbon fibers from cellulosic and pitch precursors.

The Emergency Core Cooling System uses high pressure gas to inject ordinary water into the fuel channels, followed by pumped recirculation and cooling of water within the reactor building.
