Function of a Good Housekeeping Program

The primary impediment to a good housekeeping program is a lack of thorough organization. To overcome this obstacle, a three-step process can be used5  

Determine and designate an appropriate storage area for every material and every piece of equipment 

Establish procedures requiring that materials and equipment be placed in or returned to their designated areas 

Establish a schedule to check areas to detect releases and ensure that any releases are being mitigated 

The first two steps act to prevent releases that would be caused by poor housekeeping. The third step acts to detect releases that have occurred as a result of poor housekeeping.
