Going direct

Once you are experienced at finding transition structures for a particular class of reactions, you will probably go directly to the technique that has been most reliable for those reactions. Until that time, the checklist above is our best advice for finding a transition structure with the least amount of work for the researcher and the computer. Regardless of experience, it is common to experience quite a bit of trial and error in finding transition structures. Even experienced researchers find that the way they have been regarding a reaction is often much more simplistic than the molecular motions actually involved. [Pg.157]

Flotation. The slurry of ground ore leaving the grinding circuit may be separated from part of the water in thickeners or may go directly to the flotation cells. The latter are rectangular tanks into which air is injected or drawn via impellers. Flotation is based on producing a water-repellent chemical film on the exposed sulfide minerals in the ground ore. The sulfide minerals collect on the surface of the air bubbles and rise to the top of the flotation cell, where they can be removed from the froth. In the presence of 6-iodo-l-phenyl-l-hexyne, the current increases in the cathodic (negative potential going) direction because the hexyne catalyticaHy regenerates the nickel(II) complex. The absence of the nickel(I) complex precludes an anodic wave upon reversal of the sweep direction there is nothing to reduce. If the catalytic process were slow enough it would be possible to recover the anodic wave by increasing the sweep rate to a value so fast that the reduced species (the nickel(I) complex) would be reoxidized before it could react with the hexyne. A quantitative treatment of the data, collected at several sweep rates, could then be used to calculate the rate constant for the catalytic reaction at the electrode surface. This reference system is considered to be more useful than the conventional superscript number method since it enables the reader to see immediately in which year and in which journal (at least for the more common journals whose letter codes soon become familiar) the work cited was published. Sublimation (diffusion) printing is a textile process in which color patterns in dry die crystals are transferred from a release film to the fabric under high heat and pressure. The process has been adapted to plastics. The equipment used is very similar to that used for hot stamping. Under heat and pressure, the dye crystals sublime (go directly to the vapor phase from the solid phase without melting) and the vapor penetrates the plastic product. As a result, the decoration is very durable and wear resistant. It is also cost competitive against other processes such as two-step injection molding or silk screening. [Pg.545]

When precipitation hits the land surface, the vast majority does not go directly into the network of streams and rivers in fact, it may be cycled several times before ever reaching a river and the ocean. You could first wash the column with methanol, then trichloromethane, then heptane (or methanol, ethyl ethanoate, heptane).
