Glyceryl ester of fatty acid

Based on these considerations, it appears that the best calculation approach for the prediction of the solubility of fullerenes in free fatty acids and in fatty acids derivatives is granted by equation (13.18), but simply because we are reasoning a posteriori. It is evident from our calculations that the surprising solubility of fullerenes in free fatty acids and glyceryl esters of fatty acids, or which is the same in vegetable oils, was not easily predictable and expected on the basis of theoretical considerations. Only the intuition of Braun et al. (2007) (see also Cataldo and Braun, 2007) has led to this important discovery, which may have implications and applications in medicine, cosmetics and possibly also in other fields. [Pg.326]

Soaps are the detergents used since long. Soaps used for cleaning purpose are sodium or potassium salts of long chain fatty acids, e.g., stearic, oleic and palmitic acids. Soaps containing sodium salts are formed by heating fat (i.e., glyceryl ester of fatty acid) with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. This reaction is known as saponification. [Pg.173]

Fats are the glyceryl esters of fatty acids. Glycerol is the trihydroxy alcohol CH2OH—CHOH—CH>OH (Section 13-3). It combines with three molecules of a fatty acid, such as palmitic acid (Table 13-3), to produce a fat ... [Pg.429]

The fats (glyceryl esters of fatty acids, discussed in Section 13-5) are important lipids in plants and animals and important constituents of food. Their value as a source of energy is discussed below. [Pg.470]

Internal lubricants are chemicals which lubricate the flow of PVC molecules within the melt. They are rarely necessary in plasticized PVC compounds but they are essential for unplasticized compounds. Wax and wax derivatives, glyceryl esters of fatty acids, long chain alcohols such as stearyl, cetyl alcohols and long chain esters such as cetyl palmitate are most commonly used. Concentrations depends on the munber of lubricants used to get the desired balance of behavior. Total concentration rarely exceed 4 phr. The normal concentration of intemal/extemal lubricants is between 0.2-2.0 phr. [Pg.52]

Mineral oils, being mixtures of hydrocarbons, do not react with KOH and so are not saponifiable. Vegetable and animal oils, however, are mixtures of glyceryl esters of fatty acids and so require large amounts of alkali to gel hydrolysed. Their... [Pg.101]

SNG Substitute natural gas. soaps Sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids, particularly stearic, palmitic and oleic acids. Animal and vegetable oils and fats, from which soaps are prepared, consist essentially of the glyceryl esters of these acids. In soap manufacture the oil or fat is heated with dilute NaOH (less frequently KOH) solution in large vats. When hydrolysis is complete the soap is salted out , or precipitated from solution by addition of NaCl. The soap is then treated, as required, with perfumes, etc. and made into tablets. [Pg.362]

Glyceryl Behenate occurs as a fine powder. It is a mixture of fatty acid glycerides, primarily glyceryl esters of behenic acid, that melts at about 70°. It is soluble in chloroform and practically insoluble in water and in alcohol. [Pg.202]

Glyceryl-Lacto Esters of Fatty Acids occur as a waxy solid that varies in consistency from soft to hard. They are a mixture of partial lactic and fatty acid esters of glycerin. They are dispersible in hot water and are moderately soluble in hot isopropanol, in xylene, and in cottonseed oil. [Pg.203]

The next level of complexity in lipid-based formulations is those that contain two excipients. Some typical combinations are sesame oil with a-tocopherol, medium-chain triglyceride with ethanol, and propylene glycol esters of fatty acids with glyceryl monooleate. There are at least 6 commercially available oral formulations with two lipid excipients. [Pg.293]

Polyol esters of fatty acids cem be prepeured without simultaneous formation of anhydro-compounds by reesterification of the methyl or glyceryl esters in a polar solvent, in the seime way that sucrose esters have been prepared. Residues of the toxic solvents are difficult to eliminate from the final products, emd this creates problems for the products to be used in foods. [Pg.136]

Fats and oils (Section 23.2) are glyceryl esters of carboxylic acids with long carbon chains, called "fatty acids." Fatty acids are saturated (no double bonds), monounsatu-rated (one double bond), or polyunsaturated (more than one double bond). Oils typically contain a higher proportion of... [Pg.313]
