Glyceryl monooleate is a mixture of the glycerides of oleic acid and other fatty acids, consisting mainly of the monooleate see Section 8. 

Glyceryl monooleate gels in excess water, forming a highly ordered cubic phase that can be used to sustain the release of various water-soluble drugs.It is also the basis of mucoadhesive drug delivery systems. 

Glyceryl monooleate is reported to enhance transdermah and buccal penetration.

In the absence of additives or adventitious impurities, the BLM is an electrical insulator. Glyceryl Monooleate occurs as a clear liquid at room temperature. It has a mild, fatty taste. It is prepared by esterifying glycerin with food-grade oleic acid in the presence of a suitable catalyst such as aluminum oxide. It also occurs in many animal and vegetable fats such as tallow and cocoa butter. It is soluble in hot alcohol and in chloroform very slightly soluble in cold alcohol, in ether, and in petroleum ether and insoluble in water. It melts at around 15°. It may also contain tri- and diesters.

Monoglyceride Citrate occurs as a viscous, amber liquid. Furey, in U.S. Patent No. 3,273,981 (103), disclosed a lubricity additive as being a mixture of A + B, wherein A is a polybasic acid or a polybasic acid ester made by reacting the acid with Ci—C5 monohydric alcohols and B is a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a fatty acid, for example, glyceryl monooleate, sorbitan monooleate, or pentaerythitol monooleate. Propylene glycol esters of fatty acids such as propylene glycol laurate and propylene glycol monolaurate can be used alone or as a cosurfactant. Menatetrenone (also known as vitamin K2) is used in the treatment of osteoporosis and is practically water insoluble and formulated as a solution in propylene glycol esters of fatty acids and glyceryl monooleate as 15 mg Glakay soft gelatin capsules. 

Solubility practically insoluble in water soluble in methanol freely soluble in 50% aqueous ethanol, propylene glycol, chloroform, ether, hexane, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, glyceryl monooleate, and lard, and in solutions of alkali hydroxides. 

Glyceryl monooleates occur as amber oily liquids, which may be partially solidified at room temperature and have a characteristic odor. 

Glyceryl monooleate should be stored in an airtight container, protected from light in a cool, dry place.
