Gastric distress

SALICYLATES. The nurse gives the salicylates with food, milk, or a full glass of water to prevent gastric upset. If gastric distress occurs, the nurse notifies the primary health care provider because other drug therapy may be... [Pg.155]

Niacin ER 500, 750, 1000 mg 1000-2000 mg once Side effects include flushing, itching, gastric distress,... [Pg.187]

Potatoes, other solanaceous plants Gastric distress, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea... [Pg.97]

Gastrointestinal Effects. Nausea and vomiting were not only frequently observed side effects in patients exposed to chloroform via anesthesia (Hakim et al. 1992 Royston 1924 Smith et al. 1973 Townsend 1939 Whitaker and Jones 1965), but also occurred in humans exposed to lower chloroform concentrations (22-237 ppm) in occupational settings (Challen et al. 1958 Phoon et al. 1983). Vomiting, gastric distress, and pain were observed in individuals who intentionally or accidentally ingested high doses of chloroform (Piersol et al. 1933 Schroeder 1965 Storms 1973). [Pg.149]

Adverse events occurring in at least 3% of patients with ulcerative colitis include the following Anorexia headache nausea vomiting gastric distress reversible oligospermia. [Pg.1431]

Tolmetin (Tolectin) is an antiinflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic agent that produces the usual gastric distress and ulceration observed with NSAIDs. However, tolmetin is better tolerated than aspirin and produces less tinnitus and vertigo. Tolmetin is a substitute for indomethacin in indomethacin-sensitive patients and is unique among such drugs in that it can be used to treat juvenile arthritis. [Pg.316]

Gastric distress (nausea and vomiting) is one of the most frequently reported adverse reactions. Bladder irritation (e.g., dysuria, polyuria, hematuria, and urgency) may occur. The mandelic salt can crystallize in urine if there is inadequate urine flow and should not be given to patients with renal failure. Patients with preexisting hepatic insufficiency may develop acute hepatic failure due to the small quantities of ammonia formed during methenamine hydrolysis. [Pg.522]

Diarrhea, gastric distress PO 2 tablets (30 ml) q30-60min. Maximum 8 doses in 24 hr. [Pg.144]

Notify the physician if acid indigestion, gastric distress, or heartburn occurs after 2 weeks of continuous nizatidine therapy... [Pg.881]

The most common dose-related adverse effect of ethosuximide is gastric distress, including pain, nausea, and vomiting. When an adverse effect does occur, temporary dosage reductions may allow adaptation. Other dose-related adverse effects are transient lethargy or fatigue and, much less commonly, headache, dizziness, hiccup, and euphoria. Behavioral changes are usually in the direction of improvement. [Pg.523]

To prevent gastric distress or nausea owing to irritation from a drug (e.g., sodium salicylate)... [Pg.157]

Gastrointestinal Effects. In humans, acute-duration oral exposure to unknown amounts of aluminum sulfate was reported to cause gastric distress (Ward 1989). Acute oral exposure to unknown amounts of aluminum phosphide produced vomiting and abdominal cramping (Chopra et al. 1986 Khosla et al. 1988). [Pg.134]

Gastrointestinal PGE2 normally acts to inhibit gastric acid production, and also stimulates secretion of mucous. Reduction in PGE2 (by aspirin) may lead to ulceration and gastric distress. [Pg.222]

Medicinal Uses. One of the earliest medicinal applications of the thiol proteases was the use of fig latex as an anthelmintic agent 16, 17). In more recent times papain has been used as a digestive aid in the treatment of dyspepsia and gastric distress. Its usefulness in this respect derives from the fact that papain remains active under acid conditions and is resistant to attack by pepsin. The intraperitoneal injection of sterile solutions of papain has proved to be effective in preventing post-operative adhesions. Papain is sometimes referred to as a T io-logical scalpel because of its specific proteolytic action on dead tissue without affecting live tissue. For this reason it serves as a very useful debridement in the treatment of bums and the removal of scar tissue. When used in combination with antibiotics, it has proved to be effective for topical treatment of ulcerating and infected lesions. [Pg.205]

The most common adverse effects of primaquine are gastrointestinal mild to moderate abdominal cramps and occasional gastric distress. In those without G6PD deficiency, primaquine is well tolerated as a prophylactic at doses of 15 mg/day (7), with only 1/106 patients withdrawing because of gastrointestinal upset in one study. [Pg.2920]

This. salt is the one of choice fur salicylate medication and usually is administered with stxiium bicarbonate to le.ssen gastric distress, or it is administered in enteric-coated tablets. The u.se of sodium bicarbonate is ill advised because it decreases the plasma levels of salicylate and increases the excretion of free salicylate in the urine. [Pg.755]

Clinical studies have reported very few adverse effects that are of a mild nature (usually gastric distress or headache) following saw palmetto administration at normal doses. One randomized, double-blind study of finasteride, tamsulosin, and saw palmetto for 3 months observed no differences among the three treatments in terms of the effectiveness measures and no change in sexual function in those individuals receiving saw palmetto, though ejaculation disorders were noted as the most common side effect in those individuals receiving either tamsulosin or finasteride (26). [Pg.170]

Administer macrolide an hour before meals or two hours after meals. This reduces gastric distress. [Pg.154]

Take with food to avoid gastric distress. [Pg.176]

Antacid Assess for relief of gastric distress. Monitor renal function (especially if dosing is long term or frequent). [Pg.279]

Aerobiologists at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (Fort Detrick, MD) have developed a reproducible, head-only ricin aerosol exposure model for laboratory nonhuman primates (NHP) that yielded acute LCtso values for African green monkeys or rhesus monkeys corresponding to approximately 6-10 or 15 pg/kg, respectively (Wilhelmsen and Pitt, 1996). Exposure of NHP to aerosolized ricin (particle size 1-2 pm) caused a dose-dependent toxicity that is delayed from 8 to 24 h early anorexia and lethargy were frequently observed, followed by gastric distress, hypothermia, hypotension, acute respiratory distress, and death. Rhesus monkeys exposed to the equivalent of approximately 20-40 pg/kg ricin by aerosol died from acute respiratory distress about 36-48 h after exposure necropsy revealed fibrinopurulent pneumonia, acute inflammation of the trachea and airways, and massive pulmonary alveolar flooding (Wilhelmsen and Pitt, 1996). [Pg.437]

Zinc Dermatitis, hypogeusia, alopecia, diarrhea, apathy, depression, growth retardation, impaired wound healing, immunosuppression Acute gastric distress, nausea, dizziness, death with large intravenous doses Chronic immunosuppression, decreased HDL, copper deficiency Decreased infection, hypoalbuminemia, corticosteroids, pregnancy, burns, stress, inflammation Increased tissue injury, hemolysis, contaminated collection tube... [Pg.2566]

For ulcers and gastric distress, add Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Hou Po), Rhizoma Atractylodis (Gang Zhu), and Fructus Zizyphi Jujubae (Da Zao). [Pg.202]

A rash of very sore stomachs among the Hunzas prompted Clark to investigate (Clark, 1956, p. 181). It was found that the Hunzas were flavoring their wine with bitter apricot oil, so Clark tried some himself and wound up with a terrible stomach ache. It was concluded that those who use prussic acid for bitters must expect a little gastric distress. ... [Pg.208]
