Gasoline engine equipment such as carburetors, injectors, intake manifolds, valve systems and combustion chambers, are subject to fouling by the fuel itself, the gases recycled from the crankcase, or even dust and particulates arriving with poorly filtered air. Another ASTM test method. Potential Gum (D873), combines the existent gum and the oxidation stabihty tests to measure potential gum. A sample of gasoline is subjected to the oxidation stabihty test for 960 min, filtered to remove particulates, and then subjected to an existent gum test. The potential gum is expressed as the total (unwashed) gum in this test. 

The mixture of caustic and disulfides is transferred to a settler. From the settler, the treated gasoline flows to a coalescer, sand filter, or wash water tower, before going to storage. The caustic solution is recirculated to the mixing vessel/fiber film contactor.

Remediation commenced with the interception of the recoverable gasoline. One 4-in.-diameter vapor extraction well and three 2-in. vapor monitor wells were installed. Each well was constructed with 4 ft of well screen placed and filter packed across the unsaturated portion of the shale. The annulus of the wells was sealed to the surface with bentonite and cement grout according to local standards. The monitor wells were located in a triangular pattern around the vapor extraction well at distances of 5.3, 10.6, and 25.4 ft. 

Wheel trims, grilles, trap doors for gasoline (petrol) tanks, engine covers, clutch pedals, intake manifolds, headlight parabolas, spoilers, radiator tank fittings, door handles, window winders, interconnection boxes, decorative parts, air and water filter elements, airbag canisters... 

Unfortunately for Houdry, the lead in gasoline used at the time fouled the catalyst. After operating for a short period, the catalyst lost its ability to filter out noxious gases. Houdry s company failed. Two decades later, however, after lead had been banned in gasoline, his idea was reinvented and became the basis of nearly all modern catalytic converters. 

To resolve the problem, personnel from the gasoline additive supplier worked with the customer to collect service station gasoline samples, customer fuel filters, and samples of gasoline from the retailer s local service stations and from the fuel distribition terminal. All of these samples were thoroughly analyzed. Also, January fuel delivery records were closely audited. 

Gasoline additive was not observed on customer fuel filters. 

The fuel filters were then partially blocked by rust and corrosion products carried by the water. Below-freezing temperatures possibly initiated the formation of ice within fuel filters and in fuel lines containing water. The combination of ice and corrosion products blocked fuel flow through vehicle fuel lines and filters. Gasoline flow to the engine was halted and engine shutdown followed.
